EAL/D students
Standard Australian English is essential for success in Australian schools. EAL/D students must reach the objectives of the Australian Curriculum while simultaneously learning a new language. A national EAL/D teaching resource (Aug 2011)
describing how language proficiency develops. Allowing all teachers to identify the language levels of the EAL/D learners in their classrooms and to pay attention to their specific learning requirements

These collections will form portfolios of student work that illustrate levels of achievement one set will illustrate satisfactory achievement, one above this and one below. Once samples are identified that illustrate satisfactory achievement, there will be a determination made about the nature of the above and below illustrations. Annotations would then be written based on agreed specifications. By illustrating achievement in this way authorities and teachers would be able to extrapolate to a five point scale for reporting purposes.

Reporting: ACARAs position

Reporting to parents will provide information about a students actual achievement against the achievement standards. The use of Australian Curriculum achievement standards as a common reference point for reporting to parents will contribute to national consistency in reporting.

Current Commonwealth requirements for reporting to parents include the requirement for student achievement to be reported in terms of A-E grades (or an equivalent 5-point scale). As the Australian Curriculum is being implemented during 2012 and 2013, ACARA will work with the states and territories and the Australian Government to investigate ways that may strengthen national consistency in reporting of student learning.
