Annual Anita Hill celebration set for October 23 in Columbia, South Carolina

The 2012 Anita Hill Wake-Up Call Anniversary Celebration will be held Tuesday, October 23, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The event is being held at 701 Whaley Street in Columbia. The event is held annually to commemorate the anniversary of Hill's testimony against then-nominee to the Supreme Court, Clarence Thomas, before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee in October 1991. Hill accused Thomas of sexually harassing her while she worked for him at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Department of Education. Hill's testimony dramatically increased public awareness about sexual harassment. "This important annual event serves to remind of us of the power of women working together and the work left to be done to end sexual harassment in the workplace," says event organizer Barbara Rackes. Hill's biography, Speaking Truth to Power, published in 1998, is a personal account of the Thomas hearings. She is now a professor of law, public policy and women's studies at Brandeis University near Boston. Her latest book, Reimaging Equality: Stories of Gender, Race and Finding Home, was released by Beacon Press last fall. Her commentaries are widely published in numerous national media publications. Hill has taught for more than 25 years. At Brandeis, she teaches courses on race and the law and on gender equality in the Heller Graduate School of Policy and Management. She is a graduate of Yale Law School.
