Introduction

Education perhaps more than most human activities, has a close and necessary relationship with social development. Through education, the individual prepares, or is prepared, for the future and society uses education as a principal means to maintain or to transform essential values, structure and relationship. Planners and policy maker as well as educator have come to recognize the importance of this organic relationship of education and society. As we know that education is a prime factor for social change, however serious study and comprehensive strategy is essential for social development.

Role of analysis in planning

Planning begins with an analysis of the present and this analysis often extends into the past in order to detect significant trends which might continue for sometimes into the future. An analysis of the present situation also bring to light certain key problems, many of which result from or relate to trends, although problems and trends should not be confused as being one and the same.

Why study of factors is important for planning?

Study of factors to identify and examine its significance which act upon or interact with the several variables that constitute education is important for planning. Knowledge of a few relevant factors and how they interact with education can provide the elements needed to make an adjusted projection forward of a particular trend.

Objective approach

In objective approach we seek to know: what changes will possibly or probably occur in education and why? Using the objective approach first focusing attention on the more significant current trends in education, the important problems confronting educators and policy makers and the major factors which appear likely to influence education. Thus over main points to discuss are;
Current trends Important problems Major factors affecting education

Current trends

Current education policies and strategies favoure economic growth rather than placing social and cultural aspect ahead of economy. Education for everyone has become desirable, attention has been given to mass education, primary education and adult literacy programmes Democratization of society and education. Expansion of enrolment(in progressive countries) Changes in the very goals and structure of education as well as in its content and methods are required. Pre school education has been introduced and out of school educational activities at all levels have been given more importance in many countries of the world. Overhaul the curricula to make them more relevant to their cultural and social context. Adapting local language as the medium of instruction. Mobilize additional resources for education and to strengthen their educational administration and planning services at Government level.

Important problems

Democratization

Relevance

Literacy rates and enrolment ratios lies the sad fact that expansion and improvements observed in education system around the world have seldom benefited rural population, urban poor, minority, girls and women. Relevance of education to its natural and social perspective. Relevance to multiple needs of society development The external efficiency of an educational system measured by the quality of the pupils and students who graduate from it. The most obvious symptom of internal inefficiency is the number of pupils who repeat grades or who drop out of school.

Conclusion

Planning is not just looking for future, it is always better to look for trends of presents and past to project into future planning. Educational problems are hurdles that need to be eliminated. Factors that affect the education in good or bad means need significant consideration in planning and policy making.
