From: Carol Nimmons Media Specialist Candidate Hillary Murrah Media Specialist Subject: Media Center Evaluation According to the Georgia DOE 2012 Library Media Program Self-Evaluation Rubric (http://public.doe.k12.ga.us/Curriculum-Instruction-and-Assessment/Curriculum-andInstruction/Documents/Rubric12.pdf), All Exemplary programs will meet or exceed the definitions below for Basic, Proficient, and Exemplary programs. All Exemplary programs will have achieved the requirements set out in state education laws, state board policies, state guidelines, and selected National Standards ("Georgia doe 2012," 2012). We used this state rubric to evaluate the Lake Forest Hills Media Center. Results of our evaluation are as follows: Category 1 Student Achievement and Instruction Information Literacy and AASL Standards of the 21st Century learner are proficiently integrated into content instruction; the Library Media Specialist and classroom teachers proficiently collaborate on planning to ensure use of the media center resources; the media specialist is proficiently engaged in active teaching; proficient services are provided to students who have diverse learning abilities, styles, and needs; our media specialist assesses student achievement in an exemplary manner; the LMC resources only basically encourage and support reading, viewing, and listening.* * We can bring this up to at least a proficient level by holding more specified events, such as highlighting (in the media center and on the morning show) books and other materials for Black History Month, Poetry Month, etc. Category 2 Staffing Because we are larger than a base sized K-5 school and we employ a full time media specialist but only a time assistant, we are proficient in this category. Category 3 - Facilities, Access, and Resources Our plan for flexibly scheduled access for students and teachers throughout each instructional day is exemplary; our square footage is exemplary based on FTE requirements; video streaming, interactive whiteboards, and computers are used in an exemplary manner to support the curriculum and a central electronic media distribution system is available; print and non-print resources and access to online information are provided in an exemplary manner; our library media resources are exemplarily managed for maximum efficient use. We basically promote and offer instruction of the GALILEO database.* *Because Richmond County purchases only some aspects of GALILEO, it is not always the best site for students to access data. However, we could better instruct students how they might utilize the aspects we do have.

Category 4 Administrative Support As is detailed as an exemplary level of proficiency, our superintendent has appointed a system media contact person to serve as a liaison to the department, administrative staff are in place at the school and district levels, our library media policy is current, and we spend 100 percent of our funds designated for library media center costs. Our school board adopts a media policy that proficiently provides for the establishment of a media committee at the system level and at each school. Category 5 - Staff Development Staff development opportunities are available at a proficient level for the library media staff and our media specialist proficiently provides information and technology literacy skills to other teachers and administrative staff. *This category might be brought up to the exemplary level of proficiency by allowing more time and funding for our SLMS to participate in local, state, regional, and national conferences and workshops to enhance her professional skills. In addition, allowing the media specialist the time and funding to asses teacher staff development needs, plan to address those needs, and conduct regularly scheduled workshops for teachers and administrative staff, would also greatly benefit everyone in our school community.
