TEKS: (17) Writing/grammar/usage. The student composes meaningful texts applying knowledge of grammar and usage. The student is expected to: A) use singular and plural forms of regular nouns (2); (B) compose complete sentences in written texts and use the appropriate end punctuation (1-2); (D) edit writing toward standard grammar and usage, including subject-verb agreement; pronoun agreement, including pronouns that agree in number; and appropriate verb tenses, including to be, in final drafts (2-3). (15) Writing/penmanship/capitalization/punctuation. The student composes original texts using the conventions of written language such as capitalization and penmanship to communicate clearly. The student is expected to: (C) use basic capitalization and punctuation correctly such as capitalizing names and first letters in sentences, using periods, question marks, and exclamation points Objectives: TLW identify the purpose of the verbs am, is, and are. TLW demonstrate knowledge of the verbs am, is, and are. TLW apply knowledge of the verbs am, is, and are. TWL write sentences using the verbs am, is, and are that go along with pictures he/she drew. Materials: PowerPoint Paper and crayons Whiteboard and markers Anticipatory set: Write am, is, and are on the board and ask the students when to use each one. Does it go in the naming or telling part of a sentence? Modeling: Talk about when to use each verb. (singular or plural subject) Show some sentences with the verb missing. (PowerPoint)

Have students volunteer to fill in the sentences with the right verb. Practice: Have students give examples of sentences with each verb. Check for understanding The paper is folded into 3 sections. Send them to their tables where they will have 10 minutes to draw themselves with 2 other people on the top half of the paper. In the bottom section they will write 4 sentences using each verb (am, is, and are) about the picture they drew. Modifications: Spanish translation available
