Proposal For Shoulder Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Clinic

Treatment based on individual assessment of pain and shoulder biomechanics rather a specific standardised post operative rehabilitation. Hayes et al 2004 noted that these methods tend to involve exercise progression according to a set post-operative time frame fail to account for variability in characteristics that pertain to the patient, the injury, and surgical procedure in the treatment for a rotator cuff tear. A combination of supervised and unsupervised individualised rehabilitation offers the patient the possibility of tailored exercise prescription, exercise supervision and correction, patient motivation, satisfaction and the early identification of potential rehabilitation problems. Patient Population 1. Post Internal surgical procedures 2. Shoulder instability rehabilitation in the TUBS and inappropriate muscle patterning groups especially in the atraumatic group. 3. Rotator cuff insufficiency rehabilitation especially irepairable rotator cuff tears, partial cuffe tears of less than 6mm-1cm and chronic impingement 4. Patients where the decision to operate or not to operate rests on the outcome of physiotherapy input 5. Patients from our catchment area who have had external specialist surgical procedures from specialist units such as St Marys and Royal National Orthopaedic hospital 6. Patients where the decision to refer them on to specialist units depend on the outcome of our physiotherapy input.
