Procedure
1. Assemble a distillation apparatus with a water-cooled condenser and a thermometer
in the neck of a round-bottomed distillation flask.
2. Measure 0.1 mol of cyclohexanol into the round-bottomed flask.
3. Add 4 cm

of concentrated phosphoric acid to the flask.
4. Gently heat the mixture in the flask and collect the liquid that boils off between 70C
and 90C. This is impure cyclohexene.
5. Transfer the liquid to a separating funnel, then add an equal volume of saturated salt
solution to it. Shake the funnel gently. Allow the funnel to stand for a few minutes
until the layers have separated.
6. Run off the cyclohexene layer into a small flask and add some anhydrous calcium
chloride to it. Allow the mixture to stand until the cyclohexene becomes clear.
7. Decant off the cyclohexene into a clean flask. Re-assemble the distillation
apparatus.
8. Heat the cyclohexene and collect the liquid that distils off between 81C and 85C.
