WHAT ARE HUMAN RIGHTS?

From Wikipedia: Rights are principles of freedom or entitlement; that is, rights are the fundamental rules about what is allowed of people or owed to people, according to some legal system, social convention, or ethical theory. Rights are often considered fundamental to civilization, being regarded as established pillars of society and culture, and the history of social conflicts can be found in the history of each right and its development. According to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, "rights structure the form of governments, the content of laws, and the shape of morality as it is currently perceived. The connection between rights and struggle cannot be overstated rights are not as much granted or endowed as they are fought for and claimed, and the essence of struggles past and ancient are encoded in the spirit of current concepts of rights and their modern formulations.

EXEMPLAR
The first principle of a free society is an untrammeled flow of words in an open forum. - Adlai E Stevenson. (Hook Sentence). The process of globalization has a direct effect on the principles of democracy and human rights (Topic Sentence). In the caption provided Nobel Prize winning economist Amartya Sen, explains just how important a democratic free press is in promoting human rights within a country. He highlights how access to basic needs can be easily denied in countries where open discussion cannot question policies which harm the people. Examples he includes are the dictatorial regimes of the former Soviet Union and China, where famines were caused by ill conceived policies. These deeply defective policies were not questioned by a free press and continued despite the fact that they were killing millions of people (Source Analysis). Democracies are instrumental in promoting human rights in a globalizing world (Thesis Statement). They allow people choice in how they are governed, provide a forum for the discussion of ideas, and allow an educated electorate to question bad policies. (Three reasons which will become the topic sentences for each of my body paragraphs)
