Name: Subject and Hour: Teacher: Date: Annotating Literature Step 1: Before you begin reading take a moment

to look at the various features of the book: > Examine the front and back covers (books) > Read the title and any subtitles > Examine the illustrations > Examine the print (bold, italics, etc.) > Examine the way the text is set up (book, short story, diary, dialogue, article, etc.) As you examine and read these, write questions, and make predictions and/or connections near these parts of the text.

Step 2: While you are reading keep an eye out for some of these critical things: > Characters (who) > When (setting) > Where (setting) > Words you do not understand > Important information Always write notes and areas of interest in the margins, or if you dont own the book, on a separate sheet of paper. Below are all things that should be done both mentally and physically (taking notes) while reading. > Summarize > Make predictions > Formulate opinions > Make connections > Ask questions > Analyze the authors craft/style > Write reflections/reactions/comments > Look for patterns/repetitions When annotating literature, pre-writing is one of the most important things a writer can do. While reading be sure to use the notes above, these will come in use later on. After the book is done, you as the reader/writer will already have all the notes necessary to write a full paper!
