Estimation of Sodium Hydroxide
Aim : To estimate the amount of Sodium Hydroxide present in 100ml of given
solution by using 0.1M H2SO4 solution.
Apparatus and Chemicals required :
Burette, Burette stand, Pipette, Conical flask, Methyl orange Indicator,
Glazed tile, 0.1M H2SO4 solution, given NaOH solution
Principle : H2SO4 reacts with NaOH by the following equation.
H 2 SO4 + 2 NaOH → Na 2 SO4 + 2 H 2 O
1mole 2 moles
Here, 1 mole H2SO4 reacts with 2 moles NaOH
Procedure : The solution taken in burette is given 0.1M H2SO4 solution. 20ml
of given NaOH solution is transferred into a conical flask by means of a pipette.
H2SO4 solution taken in burette. At the end point colour of the solution changes
from yellow to pale pink colour. Then, the volume of H2SO4 solution run down
from burette is noted. The titrations are repeated till consecutive readings are
obtained.

V1 = Volume of H2SO4 solution = ____________________ ml
M 1 = Molarity of H2SO4 solution = 0.1M
n1 = No.of moles of H2SO4 in the equation = 1 mole
V2 = Volume of NaOH solution = 20 ml
M 2 = Molarity of NaOH solution =?
n2 = No.of moles of NaOH in the equation = 2 moles
