Luke 59-63 AD

@2010/2012 4 books of the Gospels: Matthew- Present Jesus as the Messiah of Israel Mark- Present Jesus as the obedient servant Luke- Focus on Christ being the Son of Man and how Christ felt. John- Focus on Christ deity as Christ as the son of God. First miracles: Matthew- Cleansing of the leper (very Jewish) Mark- Casting out of the demon (gentile) Luke- Casting out of the demon (gentile) John- Turning water into wine Emphasis: Matthew- What Jesus said Mark- What Jesus did Luke- What Jesus felt John- Who Jesus really was How the gospels end Matthew- Resurrection Mark- Ascension Luke- Promise of the spirit- fulfilled in Acts John- Promise of his return- fulfilled in Revelation Stylist: Matthew- Groupings Mark- Snapshot Luke- Narrative and is most complete of all of the gospels. John- Supernatural Luke was a gentile and he was not an eyewitness, but was a contemporary of Paul. He was a physician. He accompanies Paul a great deal of time including to Philippi. His writings are considered very precise in his Greek writings. Lukes gospel is most comprehensive gospel. Luke has 20 miracles which 6 are in no other gospel. Luke has 23 parables, 18 of which are in no other gospel. Luke mentions more about widows then the other three gospels put together. It is more evidence of Luke because he focuses on compassion and the Lords humanity. The setting for Luke is a Greek culture. Matthew, Mark and Luke are known as the synoptic gospels. They focus on Jesus Galilean ministry (early ministry). John focuses his gospel primarily on the Judean ministry. 1 | Page

Luke 1 Dedication to Theophilus, Birth of John the Baptist foretold, Birth of Jesus foretold, Mary visits Elizabeth, Marys Song of Praise, Birth of John the Baptist, Zechariahs Prophecy. Luke is an investigator and he writes his gospel for Theophilus. The priest Zechariah and Elizabeth are introduced. Zechariah was chosen to perform his priestly service and pray for Israel and pray that he shall have a son. He entered the Holy of Holy and burned incense which was a great honor. But then the angel Gabriel appeared and the angel told Zachariah will bear them a son and that he shall name the son John- who would be known as John the Baptist. Gabriel told him that many would rejoice over his birth. John will drink no wine or liquor and be filled with the Holy Spirit. John will be proclaimed as the Messiahs forerunner as prophesized in Isaiah 40:3. Zachariah however was in doubt and questions the angel asking him how does he know this is true? The angel then identifies himself as Gabriel and that he has been sent to him to speak the good news. However because Zachariah doubted Gabriels words, he will silent and unable to speak until the day the baby is born. So for nine months Zechariah will be mute. Gabriel then foretold the birth of Jesus. In the sixth month, Gabriel appears again and this time in Nazareth to a woman named Mary. Gabriel tells her that she will conceive a son and she should name him Jesus. So John the Baptist is around 6 months older than Jesus. Mary asked Gabriel about specifics since she was a virgin. The angel responded to her the Holy Spirit will come to her and her child will be the son of God. Gabriel also tells her that her cousin Elizabeth has also conceived a son. Mary then goes to visit Elizabeth. In verse 41, we get to understand that there is scriptural evidence against abortion. At that time John the Baptist was inside Elizabeths womb, was about 9 inches long and weighed around a pound and a half. When he heard Marys greeting he expressed joy and he leaped in her womb. Mary then sings a song of praise. Three months later Elizabeth gives birth to John the Baptist. They circumcised him on the eighth day. Zechariah could finally speak and he praised God with his prophecy that said the God of Israel has saved us. The last verse of Luke 1 tells us that John the Baptist would live in the desert until he reappeared in Israel, which was 30 and then returned to Israel to begin his ministry. Many experts compare John the Baptist to Elijah. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. Luke 1:36 When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Luke 1:41 4 | Page

Luke 2 Birth of Jesus Christ, Shepherds and the Angels, Jesus presented at the Temple, Return to Nazareth, 12 year old Jesus in the Temple Caesar Augustus wanted a census taken about the time of Jesus birth in Bethlehem. Jesus was born in a barnyard stable probably in late September in the city of Bethlehem/David. Shepherds were out in an open field watching over their flock. Then the angel of the Lord fell upon them and he told them not to be afraid because the Savior has been born. The Shepherds then were excited and went to chase down Jesus and found him lying in a manger. The Shepherds then spread the word about Jesus. Jesus like John the Baptist went through circumcision. Then Jesus is taken to the Temple in Jerusalem to be presented to the Lord which is Jewish tradition for a couples first born son. Simeon blessed the Lord and told Mary that their child is appointed for a fall and rise for many in Israel. They all then returned to Jesus hometown of Nazareth which resides in Galilee. Lukes gospel does not cover the time they went to Egypt to escape King Herod. Nazareth is about 65 miles from Bethlehem. So despite Jesus being born in Bethlehem, he was considered a Nazarene. Next Joseph and Mary went to the Temple in Jerusalem every year to the feast of Passover, and when Jesus was 12 years old, as part of Jewish tradition, he went to Jerusalem. When Mary and Joseph returned home in the caravan, Jesus was not there. So they went back to Jerusalem and found him in the Temple with leaders carrying on dialogue with them. In verse 49 we hear Jesus first quote at the age of 12 when he mentions the temple as my fathers house. Luke explains that Mary felt that Jesus let her down because she was concerned for his whereabouts and that they didnt understand what the Lord meant. At the age of 12, Jesus understood his basic message and had a sense of destiny. Luke 3 John the Baptist prepares the Way, the Genealogy of Jesus Christ Luke 3 details the dates of the ministries of John the Baptist and Jesus. We plunge ahead 30 years where John and Jesus are grown men. Tiberius Caesar is mentioned and he ruled the Roman Empire from 14 to 37AD. He was a clever but a very cruel man. Verse 1 mentions that we are in the fifteenth year of his reign which would bring us to AD 29. Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea and he ruled from 26 to 36 AD. The Jews did not care for Pilate because he was a Roman leader that presided over the Jews, and as a result animosity ensued towards Rome. Herod Antipas is also introduced here and ruled over Galilee from 4BC to 39AD. There are two Herods that we find at this time so for informational sake, here is their background. Herod the Great was the first Herod on the scene, and he caused Joseph, Mary and 5 | Page

Jesus to flee to Egypt when Jesus was born. Herod Antipas is the second Herod mentioned and he is the son of Herod the Great, Herod Antipas is who the text is now referring to. Herod Antipas would eventually imprison John the Baptist and be responsible for having John beheaded. John the Baptist starts his ministry in Jordan and is preaching a message of repentance and forgiveness of sins. His message is damning to the Jews because he is using prophecy on the Lord coming to save them. John the Baptist says the Jews have blood of vipers, and also says that they shouldnt kid themselves that they are saved just because Abraham is their father. The people wondered if he was the Christ, and John tells them no and that there is one that is coming that is mightier than him. John says he will baptize them with water, but the one who is coming will baptize them with the Holy Spirit. John the Baptist spoke against the pagan leadership of Herod Antipas, and Herod wasnt Jewish. Herod Antipas and Philip are brothers, and Herod is having an affair with Philips wife, Herodias. John the Baptist spoke against the affair publicly. John the Baptist gets imprisoned by Herod, and is ultimately beheaded- (Matthew 14, Mark 6). John baptizes Jesus and Luke adds, and as he was praying, heaven was opened an the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice from heaven: You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased. Luke then goes over the genealogy of Jesus starting Joseph and working back to Adam who is the son of God. Luke 4 Satan tempts Jesus three times, Jesus begins his Ministry, Jesus rejected at Nazareth, Jesus heals a Man with an Unclean Demon, Jesus heals many, Jesus preaches in the Synagogues. Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness fasting for those 40 days. He ate nothing during that time, and he was tempted by the devil three times. Jesus is very hungry by now and that sets the stage for Satans first of his three temptations of the Lord. The first temptation, the devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread." However the Greek translation it should read that since you are the son of God, not if Satan knew Jesus is the Son of Man. Jesus responds that man shall not live on bread alone. (Deut 8:3). Jesus has power to do anything, as he could snap his finger and turn the desert into a bakery, but did not have the authority from the Father. Next Jesus is tempted by a second temptation. Satan led him up a mountain and showed him all of the kingdoms of the world. Satan tells the Lord he will give him all of the kingdom if Jesus worships him. Jesus responds that you should worship only the Lord our God and serve Him only. Satan then tempts Jesus for a third time where he goes to the Temple and tells him to throw himself down from here and Satan quotes scripture. Jesus said we should not put our God to the test. Satan then left him since he 6 | Page

wasnt able to tempt him. Most scholars feel an entire year has gone by from the temptation to when Jesus began ministry. In the mean time, John the Baptist had been thrown in prison in Galilee, so Jesus sets up his ministry in the middle of Galilee. Jesus message was rejected at Nazareth. He stood up and read the scroll from Isaiah. The people in the synagogue were filled with rage after hearing Jesus message. They thrust him out of the city despite it being a Sabbath day. Jesus went to preach at Capernaum in Galilee. Jesus first miracle in Luke takes place as he casts out a demon. Jesus then goes to Peters home and cures Peters mother from her high fever. We now know that Peter was married. (Matthew has an identical verse in Matthew 8:1415.) The demons acknowledged he was the son of God was and communicated that, but Jesus did not want to be exposed by the demons so he shut them up. Jesus preached in the synagogues of Judea. Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them. Luke 4:38-39. Luke 5 Jesus calls the first disciples, Jesus cleanses a leper, Jesus heals a Paralytic, Jesus calls Matthew(Levi), A question about fasting Jesus calls Peter and Andrew as his first disciples. Jesus goes into their boat after they had an unsuccessful night fishing. Jesus gives them a suggestion to pull out into the deep waters and let the nets down. They caught so many fish that their nets begin to break. Peter then fell to his feet telling Jesus to go away and said he was a sinful man. James and John are brothers who were fishermen and Jesus recruits them as well. When the four of them came to shore, they turned their back on everything and followed the Lord. Jesus then heals a man with leprosy and cures a paralytic. When the Pharisees hear Jesus saying his sins are forgiven, they ask who speaks these blasphemies? He responds the Son of Man has the authority to forgive sins. Then Jesus recruits Matthew. Matthew (Levi) the tax collector had a party at his home with a bunch of tax collectors. Tax collectors were despised by the Jews because they are collecting taxes for the Romans. The Pharisees grumbled and then asked Jesus why he eats with the tax collectors and sinners. Jesus responds that it is not those who are well that need a physician but those who are sick. Jesus adds he is not there to call the righteous but sinners to repentance. Next, the Pharisees inquire to Jesus about fasting. The Pharisees mention that John the Baptists disciples often fast, while Jesus disciples often eat and drink. Jesus says to them as long as the bridegroom (Jesus) is 7 | Page

with them, that they (disciples) should celebrate because when the bridegroom (Jesus) is then taken away they will fast. Luke 6 Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath, A Man with a withered Hand, The Twelve Apostles, Jesus ministers to a Great Multitudes, The Beatitudes, Love Your Enemies, Judging Others, Build your House on the Rock. Jesus took the disciples through the grain fields on the Sabbath Day to pick and eat corn because they were hungry. The Pharisees accused Jesus and his disciples of breaking the law. Deuteronomy 23 says they were not breaking the law. Jesus also refers back to 1 Samuel 21 where David and his followers ate the bread in the tabernacle. David ate the showbread when he was fleeing Saul and it was a matter of survival. The Pharisees were watching Jesus closely to see what they could accuse him of. They were looking for an excuse to kill him. (Matthew 12:4, Mark 3:6, John 5:16, 18), but Jesus knew their thoughts. Since Jesus is the Son of Man, he is the Sabbath. Jesus comes across man with a withered hand and he healed and the Pharisees get upset with Jesus for helping him on the Sabbath. Jesus asks them a question asking whether it lawful to save a life on the Sabbath? The Pharisees were filled with rage and discussed what they might do to Jesus. They felt humiliated in front of their audience and constituency. Next the Lord had a big decision to make the next day by picking his 12 apostles. Every time Jesus had a major decision to make he spent an incredible amount of time in prayer. This is a great example for us. Jesus went up to the mountain and spent the entire night in prayer. After praying all night he chose his 12 apostles. The twelve apostles are Peter, Andrew (Peters brother), James (not Jesus brother and not the author- same person) and John, Phillip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James, Thaddeus (the good Judas), Simon and Judas. Jesus then came down from the mountain and began to heal people. Jesus then beings to preach to large crowds as people wanted to hear him preach and they want to be healed from diseases. Next Jesus talks about the beatitudes. Matthew has 9 beatitudes and Luke has 4. Luke omits the Jews portion of the law. Jesus talks about four secrets to happiness: 1. Faith in God. 2. Love towards others. 3. Honesty towards other 4. Obedience to God. Jesus adds, that those are blessed when men hate you and scorn your name for the son of Man. Jesus then gets into a discussion on loving your enemies and that we need to do love those who hate us. If someone strikes us on one cheek, give them the other. I need to really understand this idea of turning the 8 | Page

other cheek when I am offended and focusing on this biblical truth. Whether those offenders are liberals, atheists, or anyone else, I need to bless those who curse or offend me. There are several verses on judging others. It is the misquoted verse in the entire Bible. Jesus however does not allow judging for the pleasure of judging. We are called however to judge and condemn sin from those within the Church, and God will deal with judging those outside the Church. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians, What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? 1 Corinthians 5:12. Jesus concludes the Chapter by talking about building our home on a rock. If a home doesnt have a good, solid foundation, it will crumble. Our faith is similar in that if we dont have a good faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, we will fail. Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man! Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven Luke 6:22-23 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful. Luke 6:35-36 "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say? Luke 6:46. Luke 7 Jesus heals a Centurions servant, Jesus raises a Widows Son, Messengers from John the Baptist, A Sinful Woman Forgiven The chapter focuses on Jesus helping four people- a servant, a grieving widow / mother, a perplexed prophet and a repentant sinner. The chapter starts with Jesus in Capernaum. There was a centurions (the head of around 100 from the Roman army) servant whose master was about to die. Jesus said he would go to the home of this gentile and help him. The centurion says that his home is not worthy of Jesus to come to as he knows its a gentile home and that it would be inconvenient for Jesus. Jesus is a Rabbi and they normally dont go into Gentile homes because it would be demeaning to a Jew. Jesus is marveled about his response and said he has not heard such faith from anyone from Israel. The centurion has no real understanding of Jesus, yet he is more respectful of Jesus than the Jews. By the time the servant gets home The Centurions servant is healed. The second encounter is a response to despair and he raises a womans dead son from his coffin. The third encounter then takes place with messengers from John the Baptist. We learn from the other gospels that John the Baptist publicly condemned Herod Antipas 9 | Page

for his affair with his brothers wife. Herod and Philip are brothers and Philip is married to Herodias. Herod and Herodias are having an affair and John the Baptist publicly condemns this affair. Herod throws John the Baptist into prison and he was ultimately beheaded. John sent two of his disciples to Jesus asking him if he was the one who is to come. These disciples of John encounter Jesus when he is performing miracles, and Jesus tells Johns disciples to report back to John on what they have seen. After Johns disciples leave, Jesus speaks to the crowd about John the Baptist. In verse 28 Jesus tells the crowds that John the Baptist is greatest prophet. Jesus says, I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he." Therefore John the Baptist according to Jesus is greater than Moses, Elijah and the rest of the prophets. He also says that who is least in heaven is greater the John the Baptist. Jesus then has an encounter with a sinful woman who was an uninvited guest into Simon the Pharisees home. One of the Pharisees invited Jesus to dinner and a sinful woman shows up with perfume. She begins to wash Jesus feet with the perfume. Simon thinks if Jesus was a prophet he would not let this sinful women touch him. Jesus knowing his thoughts responds to him with a story. Yes the woman was guilty of sins, but so is Simon. Jesus then forgives the womans sin. This is a perfect example of how Jesus proclaimed to be God, because only God can forgive sin. Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgivenfor she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little. Luke 7:47 Luke 8 Woman Accompanying Jesus, Parable of the Sower, Purpose of the Parables, Lamp under a Jar, Jesus Calms a Storm, Jesus heals a Man with a Demon, Jesus heals a Woman and Raises Jairus daughter from the Dead The chapter starts with Jesus preaching and he removed seven demons from Mary Magdalene. Jesus starts to minister to Mary Magdalene and to other women. Jesus then speaks in parables. The reason Jesus is speaking in parables is because only those having the spirit of God will understand. The purpose of the parable isnt to teach, but is to hide the truth for only those disciples that follow Jesus and have the spirit of God will be able to understand the message. After the Pharisees rebuke Jesus, he speaks only in parables. The Lord speaks on the Parable of the Sower. The meaning of the Sower is that the soil is the heart and it will endure. The alternatives to being on the good soil, are along the road, on the rock, and among the thorns and none of these will not bear fruit. In verse 8, we see He who has ears to hear, let him hear is said seven times in the Bible, including Revelation in dealing with the seven churches. Parables are an acting grace as those who are listening to him. 10 | P a g e

Then Jesus talks about The Parable of the Lamp. The lamp gives off light and nothing is hidden. The more truth we learn from the Lord, the brighter we are. Jesus then learns that his mother and brothers are trying to reach him. This is one place in scripture of many that tells us Jesus had brothers. We learn from the Matthew account: Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother's name Mary, and aren't his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Aren't all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?" Matthew 13:55-56. We see from other places in scripture that Jesus had brothers and sisters as well. Paul tells us: Then after three years, I went up to Jerusalem to get acquainted with Peter and stayed with him fifteen days. I saw none of the other apostlesonly James, the Lord's brother. Galatians 1:18. So James is mentioned again here as Jesus brother. For those who say Jesus brothers mean his apostles, John has a verse that contradicts that thought: Jesus brothers said to him, Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do. No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world. For even his own brothers did not believe in him. John 7:6-9. We also see later in this Gospel Mary having a son named James: Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles- Luke 24:10. So its clear that from taking all of these passages together that Christ did have siblings. Most believe none of Jesus siblings were believers until after the resurrection and the John 7:6-9 verse helps support that viewpoint. After the resurrection, James and Jude became believers and James went on head the Church in Jerusalem and he was a prominent figure in Acts. Both James and Jude have epistles in the New Testament. Next while Jesus and the disciples are out sailing on a boat, a great storm takes place. Jesus fell asleep and a gale force wind descended on the lake and the disciples are scared. The disciples woke Jesus up saying they are perishing. The Lord got up and rebuked the winds and they stopped and became calm. He then asks them where is their faith? Next as they move along, they meet a man who was possessed with demons named Legion who had not put on any clothes in a long time. He immediately refers to the Lord as the Son of God and asks Him not to be tormented. Jesus then cleared Legions spirit. Then a man named Jairus who was an official of the synagogue fell at Jesus feet because his 12 year old daughter was dying. Then while caught up in the large crowds trying to get to Jairus home, someone touches Jesus and he asks who touched him. Jesus knew who touched him, but he wanted the Roman to reveal herself and wanted her to express the faith on why she touched him. The girl then came trembling with fear and fell down before the Lord and declared in the presence of all people why she touched him. Jesus said she had great faith and she should go in peace. As they try to move on to Jarius house to save his daughter, someone else from 11 | P a g e

the synagogue told them that Jarius daughter died and there will be no use to trouble the teacher anymore. Jesus told him not to be afraid and only believe she will be made well. When Jesus went to the house, he only allowed Peter, James and John and the Jairus and his wife to enter. Everyone was weeping but the Lord said for them to stop weeping because she has not died, but is only asleep. They laughed at him knowing she was dead. He took the girl by the hand, and asked the girl to arise, and she got up immediately. Jesus asked the parents not to tell anyone he raised their daughter from the dead. And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. Luke 8:8 Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. And he was told, Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you. But he answered them, My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it. Luke 8-19:21 Luke 9 Jesus sends out the 12 Apostles, Herod Antipas is perplexed by Jesus, Jesus feeds the 5,000, Peter confesses Jesus as the Christ, Jesus foretells of his Death, Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus, The Transfiguration, Jesus Heals a Boy with an Unclean Spirit, Jesus again foretells of his Death, Who is the Greatest, A non-disciple was casting out spirits, A Samarian village reject Jesus, The Cost of Following Jesus Jesus sends out the 12 apostles and gave them the power and authority over demons to heal diseases in Galilee. Herod Antipas heard of the miracles that the apostles performed and panicked. Herod had John the Baptist beheaded and believes John the Baptist had risen from the dead. Some of the Jews thought that Elijah has reappeared (Malachi 4). Next Jesus feeds 5,000 men from 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. The feeding of the 5,000 is the only pre-crucifixion miracle covered in all four gospels. Some wanted to anoint Jesus as the King, but every time they attempt to do, Jesus flees as he is not ready to become king and that goes back to Daniel 9. It is not yet Jesus time to be anointed the King. Jesus then begins to pray because he has an important question to ask the apostles. Jesus asks the question to all of them who do the people say who I am? The disciples said some say John the Baptist, Elijah, or one of the other prophets. Then Jesus asks the question to the disciples who do you say I am? This is a question that all believers need to ponder and respond to. This event is going to be the most important event in Peters life. Peter says he is the Christ, the Son of the Living God. Then Jesus for the first time in Luke foretells of his death. Jesus says he will be rejected by the chief priests and that he will be killed and raised up on the 12 | P a g e

third day. Then Jesus asks the disciples to take up their cross and follow him. The Lord says if anyone wishes to follow him, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow Him. Then Jesus says, I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they get to see the kingdom of heaven. This is not a reference to the last generation prior to the Rapture, but a statement applicable to whats about to happen next. The transfiguration is about to be told, but we need to understand that when Jesus says that some who not taste death before heaven that he is referring to Peter, James and John who are about to witness the transfiguration. Jesus is lit up as bright as the sun during the transfiguration and this is how he is in heaven. The Greek word kingdom can also be translated as royal splendor meaning that the disciples standing there would see Christ as He really is- King of heaven - which occurred in the transfiguration. Next will be the greatest Bible conference ever held known as The Transfiguration. Jesus took Peter, James and John on the top of a mountain to pray. Jesus became a bright white figure and then Moses and Elijah appear. Peter not understanding rank of the three wants to build three tabernacles for each of them, suggesting they should all be equal. While Peter is putting his foot in his mouth, a bright cloud appears and a voice from the cloud calls out, this is My beloved Son, with whom I am wellpleased; listen to Him! This was a very private event and Jesus told the disciples not to tell anyone about it until he has risen from the dead. Moses and Elijah typify the law and the prophets. Moses was the law, and Elijah was a powerful prophet who called fire from heaven (1 Kings 18), shut rain off for 3 1/2 years. While Moses died, Elijah did not die, but he was translated without death (similar to a rapture). The Transfiguration was the meeting between Jesus, Elijah and Moses, and was essentially a staff meeting to discuss Revelation 11. In Matthew 10 the disciples ask the Lord why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first? In Malachi 4, the last couple verses of the Old Testament say, "See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse Malachi 4:5-6. The Old Testament is then ended. Elijah was expected by the Jews to precede before the terrible day of the Lord. In John 1:19-21, The Rabbis were looking for a return of any of the three between the Messiah, Elijah (Malachi 4) or Moses (Deuteronomy 18). Also see Matthews account on the Transfiguration (Matthew 17) adds a few minor things such as the disciples falling to the ground when Elijah and Moses appear. On the next day, when Jesus, Peter, John and James come down from the mountain, a man asks Jesus to look upon his sick child dealing with convulsions. The man asked the disciples to cure the child, but the disciples could not handle it. Jesus expected

the disciples to cure the child and he is visibly upset with them as he speaks out and calls them an unbelieving and a perverted generation. The disciples were not praying and believing in the Lord and Jesus speaks his frustration. Jesus then heals the unclean spirit from the boy. Jesus again foretells his death to the disciples but they did not understand. Then an argument among the disciples starts up as who would be the greatest disciple? Jesus says whoever humbles himself like this little child who he had at his side will enter the kingdom. John then tells Jesus that someone was casting out spirits in His name, but John tried to prevent him because he does not follow the disciples. Jesus tells John not to hinder the man. A Samarian village does not welcome Christ, so they attend move to another village. Jesus is moving towards Jerusalem. As they are going to Jerusalem, a then three different men want to fall along. Jesus lets them know that he has no home on his own and those would have to give up their basic necessities. All three of these examples end in that we are not clear on what they decide to do. For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. Luke 9:26 Luke 10 Jesus sends out the 72, Woe to Unrepentant Cities, The return of the 72, Jesus rejoices in his Fathers Will, Parable of the Good Samaritan, Martha and Mary The Lord sends out 72 in pairs on his way to Jerusalem. He tells them to carry no bag, shoes or money and greet no one on the way. He basically tells them its going to be dangerous. Jesus tells the pairs to find a house and greet the family living there. If they do not receive them, for them to dust themselves off and move to another town. He did not want them going from house to house. For those who are sick, they were to advice that the Kingdom of God was near. It wasnt their job to make them believe, but simply declare in constructive ways. Jesus then rebukes four cities. The message was geared to let the Jews also know the Kingdom of God is near, and would be more tolerable for Sodom then that city. Jesus then mentions heaven and hades. In the Hebrew Scriptures, the word used to describe the realm of the dead is sheol. It simply means the place of the dead or the place of departed souls/spirits. The New Testament Greek word that is used for hell is hades, which also refers to the place of the dead. The Greek word gehenna is also used in the New Testament for hell and is derived from the Hebrew word hinnom. Other Scriptures in the New Testament indicate that sheol/hades is a temporary place where the souls of unbelievers are kept as they await the final resurrection and judgment at the Great White Throne judgment(final judgment mentioned in 14 | P a g e

Revelation 20). The 72 return and they have great joy with their accomplishments. Jesus then rejoiced in the Holy Spirit speaking of the Father. Then a lawyer stands up and asks Jesus how do we inherit eternal life? Jesus said that you should love the Lord your God with all of your heart, and with all of your soul, and with all of your strength, and with all of your mind; and your neighbor as yourself. Then Jesus speaks of a Parable of The Good Samaritan. We know its a parable because there is no name given to the man. For our information, if Jesus uses a name then it is not a parable. This Good Samaritan is a Parable however. A man went from Jerusalem to Jericho (drops 3000 feet in elevation in 17 miles). He was beat and robbed and was left nearly dead. A priest and Levite, who were the Jewish leaders see him and pass by him without helping the man. Then a Good Samaritan helped him out by bandaging his wounds bringing him to an inn. Jesus then said out of the three between the two Jewish leaders and the Good Samaritan that the Good Samaritan proved to be the good neighbor. As Jesus moves along towards Jerusalem, they are in a town two miles from Jerusalem. Next, Jesus introduces us to Mary and Martha. A woman named Martha welcomed Jesus into her home. Martha called her sister Mary who was listening to Jesus preach. Martha was preparing the meal and serving and wanted Mary to assist. Martha goes to the Lord asking him if he cares that Mary has left her do all of the preparation? Jesus responds that Martha is worried and bothered by too many things and that only one thing is necessary for Mary has chosen the good part, and that will not be taken from her. Luke 11 The Lords Prayer, Jesus and Beelzebul, Sign of Jonah, Woes to Pharisees and Lawyers The disciples start the chapter by asking the Lord to teach them how to pray as John the Baptist told his disciples. Jesus speaks of John the Baptist as the greatest as all prophets, and John had to rely on prayer. If both Jesus and John depended on prayer, it shows us we need pray. The Lord goes over a basic prayer with the disciples. The prayer given is a shortened version of the so-called Lords Prayer is from Matthew 6:9-13. However it should not titled the Lords Prayer because he couldnt pray it. It should be considered the disciples prayer. There is no scriptural writing that says that this prayer is what the apostles prayed daily. Jesus did not have a ritual to memorize a prayer and have it become a clich because it is not intimate. John 17 would be an example of the Lords Prayer and it is much more intimate. We come to a major turning point in the gospels where Jesus and the Pharisees start their rivalry. Jesus casts out a demon from someone and the crowds were amazed. The Pharisees comment on this miracle and say Jesus cast out these demons through Beelzebub (Satan). The Pharisees are 15 | P a g e

blaspheming the Holy Spirit which is the unpardonable sin (Matthew 12:32). Jesus makes his rebuttal being it would make no sense for Satan to drive out his demons because it would be weakening his own position within his kingdom. Jesus here confirms Satan is a real person with a real kingdom that is strong and united. The Pharisees want Jesus to provide a sign who he is. Hes already performed numerous miracles, but they want a sign. Jesus then speaks of Jonah the Prophet saying that no signs will be given except the sign given of Jonah. Johan was a sign to the Ninevites who at first repented, just as Jesus was a sign to this generation. Jonas was in the belly of the fish for three days, as was Jesus was in the ground for three days. Jesus then gives the Pharisees their six woes including the lack of loving God, they love the most important seats, loading people down with burdens they cannot meet, etc. Jesus then refers to the Queen of the South, the Queen of Sheba. Jesus corroborates the Queen of Shebas visit to Solomon from 1 Kings 10. While the queen was historically pagan in belief, she eventually recognized the truth of God. Next a Pharisee asks to have lunch with Jesus. The Pharisee then comments on Jesus did not ceremonially wash before dinner as they focus on the outside. Jesus pronounces woes, and responds to him that the Pharisees see the outside, but their inside is full of wickedness. Jesus then pronounces three woes on the Pharisees letting them know of their evil. Then Jesus picks on the lawyers. The Pharisees then become very hostile with the Lord. But he said, Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!- Luke 11:28 Luke 12 Beware of the Leaven of the Pharisees, Acknowledge Christ before Man, Parable of the Rich Fool, Do not be Anxious, You must be Ready, Not Peace but Division, Settle with Your Accuser Jesus starts the chapter by telling the disciples to beware the Pharisees because of their hypocrisy. Jesus then tells the disciples that if we confess him before man, he will confess us before the angels of God. He then also adds that the only unpardonable sin is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. Jesus then discusses the Parable of a Rich Fool that discusses wealth. He provides insight on wealth can choke the word of God, and wealth has challenges such as a false sense of security. Then Jesus tells us not to be anxious. Jesus tells us that being anxious cannot add one hour to our lives. Jesus tells us not to worry. Paul talks about worrying in Romans: But the man who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin. Romans 14:23. Jesus then tells us that we need to be ready and alert when he comes back. (Rapture will be prior to the Second Coming but we dont know 16 | P a g e

how far in advance). A focus on the rapture and the Second Coming will galvanize our walk, just as not believing there is a rapture or Second Coming will hurt our walk. The final part of the chapter deals that we are not with peace but in division. In verse 49 Jesus tells us that he has come to cast fire on the Earth and has not come for peace, but to divide. We Christians are in a cosmic war on enemy territory. We are facing opposition and conflict and our Lord coming to this world will be bringing judgment. In verse 51, Jesus did not come to spread peace on earth but to divide men. (See also Matthew 10:34). Are we on Jesus side or against him? We should also try and settle up with our accusers. Then the Lord speaks on interpreting time. He says, we can see a cloud to the west and a shower is coming or feel a southern wind and say we will have a scorching heat, and it happens. He adds, You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and sky, but you dont know how to interpret the present time? The Lord has given us ample evidence of prophecy. And yet there are people making predictions on the stock market, or able to make weather predictions, but they are not aware that we are in the last days. Many people are just as ignorant over the return of Jesus Christ and those same people will mock the idea. And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God, but the one who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God. Luke 12:8-9 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. Luke 12:10 And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you. Luke 12:29-31 You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him." Luke 12:40 Luke 13 Repent or Perish, Parable of the Barren Fig Tree, Woman with Disabling Spirit, Parable of the Mustard Seed, The Narrow Door, Lament over Jerusalem Jesus is on the move towards Jerusalem. In verse 1 there was a question presented to Jesus as sort of an entrapment question dealing with the Galileans. Jesus tells them unless you repent of your sins, you will perish. Next Jesus talks about the Parable of The Barren Fig Tree. The meaning of the Fig Tree 17 | P a g e

parable is that unless you repent, you will perish. The parable is a three entity relationship. The Vineyard owner is God, the gardener who takes care of the vineyard is Jesus, and the tree is us. The fig tree is used as a symbolic representation of Israel. Do we bear fruit? Either we will bear fruit, or if we dont the tree will cut down. Israel since it did not bear fruit was cut off. Jesus is then preaching in the synagogue on the Sabbath and heals a woman crippled for 18 years. The leader of the synagogue was upset with Jesus that he healed the woman on the Sabbath. Jesus says to them, you hypocrites! Jesus puts his adversaries to shame and the people rejoiced. Jesus is asked, what is the kingdom of God like? Then Jesus responds saying heaven is like a mustard seed and then speaks of the Parable of the Mustard Seed. The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree. Someone then asks Jesus who will be saved. Jesus responds to the question of who will get into heaven commenting that it is like a narrow gate in verse 24- The Narrow Gate (See also Matthew 7:13-14 and 7:21:23) where Christ says many will not gain entrance into heaven. This statement alone should be the scariest verse in the entire Bible. Next Jesus tells some who knock on the door and ask the Lord to open it and Jesus tells them he doesnt know them and for them to depart because they are evildoers. Later one of the Pharisees tell Jesus that Herod wants to kill him, and Jesus responds he will cast out demons and perform cures today and on the third day he will reach his goal (crucifixion). In verse 34 is the purpose of all history to gather his children together and Jesus laments over Jerusalem. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not have it! In verse 35 we get the triumph of all history Behold, your house is left to you desolate; and I say to you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!' And someone said to him, Lord, will those who are saved be few? And he said to them, Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. When once the master of the house has risen and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, open to us, then he will answer you, I do not know where you come from. Luke 13:23-25

Luke 14 Healing a Man on the Sabbath, Parable of the Wedding Feast, Parable of the Great Banquet, Cost of Discipleship The chapter begins with Jesus entering into the house of one of the Pharisees and they watched him closely. Their goal was to trap him. Jesus heals a man suffering from dropsy on the Sabbath and asks them if it is lawful to heal on the Sabbath? The Pharisees did not respond. Jesus placed more emphasis on human need then ceremonial law. Next Jesus discusses a couple of parables. The Parable of the Wedding Feast speaks of situations where we naturally want to sit as close to the host as possible for there is an assumption the closer we sit next to the host, the more important we are. (For example James and John wanting to sit next to Jesus at the Last Supper). Jesus says we should sit in the lower positions and allow the host to honor you if he requests you sit closer to him. The second parable is The Great Banquet where everyone who is invited declines to attend and makes an excuse. We can think of this parable in ways that the Jesus gave us the invitation to salvation and many made excuses on why they wouldnt accept it and declined his invitation. Jesus speaks of the Cost of Discipleship. He says we must hate our families. Hating our families is a violation of the law and that is not what Jesus is saying here. What he is saying there is that we must put Christ first and foremost above our families. Our love of Jesus must be supreme. It must be greater than our love for your family, your home or yourself, because it may cost you all of these things to follow Jesus Christ. Following Christ did cost some their families. For they were ostracized by their families when they made their commitment to Jesus Christ. Jesus said if you are not willing to give up these family relationships, you cant be his disciple. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. Luke 14:11 Luke 15 Parable of the Lost Sheep, Parable of the Lost Coin, Parable of the Prodigal Son Chapter 15 deals with three common parables of the Lost Sheep, Lost Coin and Prodigal Son. These parables all deal with something that was lost and was later found. We can think of these parables as when a lost person finds Christ and we can then celebrate. The Pharisees were grumbling that Jesus was eating and associating with the outcasts. Jesus speaks of The Parable of the Lost Sheep. He says that if we have 100 sheep, and one gets lost, that he will leave the 99 sheep to focus on finding the one lost sheep, and he will rejoice when founding the sheep. Likewise, we will rejoice when one sinner who has repented. The Parable of the Last Coin has a similar message in 19 | P a g e

rejoicing if we find the lost coin. The Parable of the Prodigal Son is the next parable covered. A man had two sons and the younger son one wanted his share of the property now and the father obliged. The younger son then took his property and took a journey into a far country and squandered all of his property. He eventually lost everything and came back to his family and admitted he sinned and asked his father to treat him as one of his servants. His father said to bring him the best robe and rejoice because his son is now home. The older brother became angry because while he was loyal, his brother was not yet was being celebrated. His father told his loyal son that he was always with him, but this was a time to celebrate because his younger brother was dead but was now alive. Luke 16 Parable of the Dishonest Manager, Law and Kingdom of God, The Rich Man and Lazarus. The chapter begins with The Parable of the Dishonest Manager. This parable is a lesson in discipleship. Much of Luke emphasizes discipleship. The summary of the parable is that if we cannot handle our own finances, then why would God trust us with more spiritual responsibilities? If we are faithful in the little things, we will be faithful in the large things just as if we are unfaithful in the little things, we will be unfaithful in the important decisions. The summary over the Parable of the Dishonest Manager is that this dishonest manager knew he was about to be fired and therefore started making deals with his boss debtors for monies they owed to the dishonest managers boss. The manager made these deals to the debtors because he wanted these debtors to remember that he cut them this deal and they would remember that deal later on. The dishonest managers thought process was that he was not strong enough to dig and too ashamed to beg and since he was about to lose his job, he cut these deals with the debtors so that he could sponge off them later on. The dishonest manager is stealing from his manager by lowering the debt they owed to his boss. He started as a crook and ended as a bigger crook. The surprising thing we see in verse 8 was the rich man who was being stolen from by dishonest manager actually commends this dishonest manager for cutting these deals. The rich man says in the next sentence that the sons of this world are shrewder than in dealing with the world than the sons of the light. So this rich man probably became rich because he was also a crook. Remember the world hates Christ. The rich man in verse 9 says to make friends by means of unrighteous wealth. Verse 10 talks about faithfulness. If we are not faithful with the little decisions in life (saying you are going to call at a certain time and dont) then you will not be faithful for the larger and important things in life. This is a very important life lesson worth remembering. Dont be afraid to 20 | P a g e

end a business relationship or otherwise if someone promises they would call and they dont. If they think I might be overreacting, refer them to Luke 16:10 and they might learn a lesson from it. A perfect example is our cleaners who keep making promise after promise on when our clothes will be returned, yet there is always an excuse. Do not be unfaithful and do not say one thing and not do it. If we fail to break our promise, call and let the other party know that what we told them is not true and fix it. Jesus then speaks of Law and the Kingdom of God. Jesus teaches us that we cannot serve two masters, and we cannot serve both God and wealth. Jesus then speaks on divorce and remarriage. Matthew 19:9 is a somewhat parallel verse I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery." When marriages have a hardening of the heart it becomes a sham. It is true that God hates divorce, and he wants us to take marriage very seriously. However, God forgives murderers and he forgives people that go through divorce. Jesus then focuses the rest of the chapter on the story of the rich man and Lazarus. It is not a parable because there are names involved. Lazarus was crippled and in bad shape and he was in abject poverty. Lazarus would eat from the crumbs of the rich mans table and the rich man kept all of his money to himself. Lazarus then dies but then the rich man dies. Lazarus was righteous not because he was poor, but because he depended on God. The rich man was not condemned because he was rich, but because he didnt use his resources properly. The rich man after he dies prays and cries out to Abraham to have mercy on him. He has knowledge of his own torment and had awareness of Lazarus pleasant condition. Abraham responds back telling the rich man that during his lifetime, he received good things and likewise, Lazarus bad things. Now Lazarus is comforted and he is in agony. Abraham said there was no crossing the barrier between them. Then the rich man prayed that he warn his father and family to warn them of this place torment. Abraham tells that the rich man they have Moses and the Prophets. He then adds if they dont listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not listen to anyone from the dead. The point of the story is that Jesus clearly taught the existence of heaven and hell as well as the deceitfulness of riches to those who trust in material wealth. Jesus plainly used this story to teach that after death the unrighteous are eternally separated from God, that they remember their rejection of the Gospel, that they are in torment, and that their condition cannot be remedied. There is another Lazarus raised from the dead, but that was a different Lazarus (John 11).

21 | P a g e

One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much. Luke 16:10 No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money." Luke 16:13 Luke 17 Temptations to Sin, Increase our Faith, Jesus cleanses Ten Lepers, The Coming of the Kingdom Jesus continues on his way to Jerusalem to reach the climax. The first part of the book deals with some instructions Jesus gives to us regarding Temptations to Sin. Jesus talks about stumbling blocks will come. Jesus then speaks to atheists of the time. Jesus talks to those who cause little ones to stumble upon entering the kingdom. It is impossible for those who live a godly life to not be offended by todays media or entertainment. Jesus says it would be better if a milestone was hung around his neck and thrown into the sea then to cause those little ones to stumble. This message would apply to Richard Dawkins, Peter Jennings, school administrators and atheists who enforce studies of evolution in the classroom, or anyone who confuses young children suggesting that God did not create them. Atheists who attempt to turn others away from God are going to have a terrible day of judgment on their soul when they will have to one day face the Lord. Jesus says in verse 3 that we should rebuke a brother if he sins, and if he repents forgive him. Luke then goes into some detail about forgiving 7 times per day, which is similar to the Matthew gospel when Jesus talks about forgiving 70 times 7 times (See Matthew 18:22). Remember Luke is not a witness, but is investigating this information from other sources. Next Jesus then cleanses ten lepers (Hansens disease). The word about Jesus is well known now and they say, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us! Of the ten that Jesus cleansed, only one was saved. Jesus then speaks of the coming kingdom of God and foretells of the Second Coming. He starts with a message to the Pharisees that the Kingdom of God is in the midst of you. This means that the kingdom was right there in their presence in the form of Christ. He also predicts he will suffer. He then mentions how generations were destroyed. He references both Noahs generation at the flood, and Lots generation in Sodom when it rained fire and brimstone. In verse 32, Jesus references to look forward towards him and not look behind on worldly pleasures. Jesus references Genesis 19, when Lot was to escape from Sodom, they were told not to look back. His wife however was more focused on the worldly pleasures back in Sodom, instead of God. She then looked back and became that pillar of salt. Then the LORD rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the LORD out of heaven. And he overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and 22 | P a g e

all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. But Lots wife, behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt- Genesis 19:24-26. Its a message that speaks clearly about the sin of being worldly minded. The son of Man will be revealed at a time that is similar to what the chaos that went on in Sodom and Gomorrah. The chapter closes on six different people, and three of those are taken. Some experts believe that those that are taken away are one that will receive judgment. However some believe say the ones that are taken are the ones that are saved. Jesus said to his disciples: "Things that cause people to sin are bound to come, but woe to that person through whom they come. It would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around his neck than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin. Luke 17:1-2 Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him Luke 17:3 Luke 18 The Parable of the Persistent Widow, The Pharisee and the Tax Collector, The Rich Ruler, Jesus foretells his death a third time, Jesus heals a blind beggar. The Lord starts the chapter with The Parable of the Persistent Widow. Men ought to be persistent with prayer. The parable speaks of a judge not fearing God or man. A widow seeks this judge for help with her case, and he wouldnt hear it. In those days, the judge instead of the law set the agenda. In order to be heard, you would have to bribe the judge through his assistant. The judge continually tells her that he will not here her case. However because she continually pressed him, and was persistent, he agrees to hears her case. Persistence in this case paid off for the widow. The point of the parable is that if an unrighteous judge can give justice, then imagine how a Godly and righteous judge will see that justice is served. Next there is another parable about a Pharisee and a tax collector and how they pray. The Pharisees were the highest of the priests that the Jews looked up to. The tax collector was despised because they collected taxes from the Jews to give to the Romans, and they pocketed the difference. The Pharisee is praying to God that he is not like sinners, adulterers and unjust or like this tax collector. He fasts twice a week and gives tithes. He is measuring other people as a standard for measuring righteousness and he is obviously very pretentious. The tax collector then prays and calls out to the Lord that he is a sinner and screams that He be merciful. Jesus concludes their differences in pray by speaking of humility: For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted. Luke then discusses how people were bringing their babies to touch the Lord but the disciples rebuke them. Jesus said, let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the 23 | P a g e

kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it. Children have a sense of purity about them and they have a keen sense of discernment. Children have a good sense of judgment and we sometimes can see the love they have for the Lord and Jesus tells us that unless we receive the kingdom like a child does, we will not enter it. This is one of those verses we need to remember. Next is The Parable of the Rich Ruler. This young ruler asks Jesus what he must to inherit the kingdom of God. Jesus indicates that wealth is a hindrance to obtain eternal life. However dont presume that riches keep us from heaven (Abraham, David, Jobe). When we have wealth, we are not sensitive to the real needs that only God can provide. It is being possessed by riches that make salvation difficult for the wealthy because they are consumed by their possessions, not God. Next, Jesus foretells his death a third time. Luke explains in that the disciples did not understand the meaning behind Jesus again prediction of death. Jesus then while approaching Jericho heals a blind beggar. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." Luke 18:14 But Jesus called the children to him and said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." Luke 18:16-17 Luke 19 Zacchaeus, the Parable of the Ten Minas, The Triumphal Entry, Jesus weeping over Jerusalem, and Jesus cleanses the Temple. As Jesus is moving through Jericho, we are introduced to a rich tax collector by the name of Zacchaeus. In the previous chapter we learned that it is very difficult for the rich to enter salvation. Zacchaeus was identified as rich, and since he is a tax collector, he was despised by Jews. Zacchaeus climbs up a tree to get a glimpse of the Lord when he passes through town. Jesus says, Zaccheaus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today. Zacchaeus gladly welcomed him. People were grumbling when they saw this. Jesus then says he comes to seek and save those that are lost. Next Jesus gives us The Parable of the Ten Minas. (This parable is similar to the Ten Talents from Matthew 25). In the Luke version, a nobleman went on vacation and gave the servants 10 minas and asked them to do business with it until he came back. The first two servants earned money 10 and 5 finas respectively. The third servant earned nothing and was rebuked for being worthless. Jesus then begins to plan the Triumphal Entry. While they approached Bethphage and Bethany, Jesus sent two of his disciples to the village ahead of 24 | P a g e

him and asked them to bring him a colt. Bethany is on the base on the east side of the Mount of Olives. He asks his disciples to the village ahead to bring back the colt and if anyone asked why they are untying it, that they should tell him the Lord is in need of it. They brought the colt to Jesus. Jesus was setting the stage for his deliberate fulfillment of the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9. Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Zechariah 9:9. The donkey in that day was the most elite type of transportation. Jesus arranged his transportation based on Zechariah 9:9. Jesus would ride the donkey into Jerusalem four days before Passover. The place was packed with a lot of people because people came to Jerusalem from all over to celebrate Passover. Palm Sunday will be the day that Jesus will ride the donkey into Jerusalem acknowledging himself that he is the Messiah of Israel and it is to the exact day that Gabriel told Daniel he would present himself as the Messiah the King. Daniel says: Know therefore and understand that from the going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem to the coming of an anointed one, a prince, there shall be seven weeks. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again with squares and moat, but in a troubled time. Daniel 9:25. Jesus would ultimately be slaughtered four days later on a Wednesday (not on Good Friday). The disciples then put Jesus on the colt near the descent of the Mount of Olives and the crowd began to rejoicing to Psalms 118:26 shouting BLESSED IS THE KING WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!" Applying this song to this context is blasphemy because the disciples proclaim Jesus as the Messiah. When the Pharisees heard this, they told Jesus to rebuke their disciples. Jesus responds if they become silent, the stones would cry out. In verse 41, Jesus is making his way towards Jerusalem, and he sees the city and wept over it just as Jeremiah prophesized. Jesus is weeping because the Jews did not understand the prophecy of Daniel 9. On April 6, 32AD on Palm Sunday, Jesus presents himself as the Messiah. Jesus says in verse 42 that he pronounces judicial blindness on Israel. Israel however will not be blind forever. Paul in Romans says, I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in. Romans 11:25. In verses 43-44 Jesus talks about where Israels enemies will destroy the city which was fulfilled in 70AD. Why did the Lord allowed Jerusalem to be destroyed? Jesus answers this at the end of verse 44. They will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation. Jesus was holding the Jews accountable to know Daniel 9. Jesus then cleanses the Temple and says to the Pharisees, my house is a house of prayer; but you have made it a den of robbers. Jesus told them that his 25 | P a g e

house should be a house of prayer, but the Pharisees made it a robbers den. Jesus knows the chief priests were trying to destroy Him. Luke 20 Authority of Jesus Challenged, Parable of the Vine Growers, Paying Taxes to Caesar, Sadducees ask about the Resurrection, Re- Marriage, Whose son is the Christ. Jesus is teaching the people in the Temple and the chief priests question Jesus authority by asking him by what authority is he doing these things. Jesus responds back with a question asking if the Baptisms of John was from what source, heaven or men? The Pharisees cannot answer that Johns baptisms were from heaven because The Pharisees have made it known to be against John the Baptist. The Pharisees also cannot answer that Johns baptisms were from were from man because the Pharisees fear the peoples reaction to discrediting John, as the Jews see John the Baptist as a prophet. Its a catch 22 for the Pharisees. When the Pharisees realized they were stuck, they said they cannot tell, and Jesus smugly responds saying that since they cannot answer his question, he is not answering their question. Jesus then speaks of The Parable of the Vine Growers/Tenants. There is a parable of a vineyard from Isaiah 5 where this vineyard is actually a pun for the nation of Israel. This parable is about a landowner who planted a vineyard and rented it out to vine growers. When the owner sent his slaves to receive the produce, the vine growers sent him away empty handed and beat him up. Then the owner of the vineyard sent his own son, but they killed him. This story sums up on how the Jews were the vine growers (aggressive party that killed the son), and Jesus was playing the role of the owners son (who was killed by the vine growers). Jesus here is predicting his own death. Jesus closes the parable by saying that Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken, but upon whomsoever that stone shall fall, it will grind him to powder." You have one of two relationships to Jesus Christ: either that of submitting to Him, falling upon the stone, or resisting Him, and ultimately being ground to powder. Woe unto him who strives with his maker! Many people are so foolish as to fight against Jesus Christ. Fall upon the stone, fall upon Jesus Christ! You'll find you'll be broken; better that you do that than in judgment have Him fall upon you and be ground to powder. Next the Pharisees were trying to trick Jesus. They asked him if it is lawful to give a poll-tax to Caesar or not? Jesus responded that we should render to Caesar what is Caesars and what to God what is Gods. Then a Sadducees (those who believed there is no resurrection) ask Jesus a question on re-marriage. The Sadducees were the worst enemy of the gospel in the first century and today. They ask Jesus if a man marries a woman and dies, and his six brothers marry the same woman and 26 | P a g e

follow suit, who will be married to the wife since all seven brothers married her? Jesus responds that the sons of this age are married, and that in heaven there is no marriage. The Pharisees and scribes actually told Jesus he has spoken well with his answer, but Jesus isnt finished with them yet as he ends the chapter telling his disciples to beware of the scribes. The chapter finishes up the question whose Son is the Christ. If Jesus is the son of David, how can he also be Lord to David? The answer is because Jesus is both. Jesus replied, "The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. But those who are considered worthy of taking part in that age and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage. Luke 20:34-35. Luke 21 The Widows Offering, The Olivet Discourse, Jesus speaks of Things to Come, Foretells the Destruction of the Temple, Jesus foretells wars and persecutions, Jesus foretells the destruction of Jerusalem, the coming of the Son of Man, the lesson of the Fig Tree, and to watch ourselves. The chapter starts The Parable of the Widows Offering. This is a parable with a rich man and poor widow add their gifts into the treasury. Jesus said even though this woman put only two coins in the treasury, that she gave a greater proportion in there then the rich man. God sees the proportion or whats left, where as we see the amount we give. Then Jesus inner circle and Andrew actively seek out Jesus at the Mount of Olives which is known as the Olivet Discourse. Peter, James and John and Andrew were with Jesus at Jairus home and at the Transfiguration. Matthews gospel in chapters 24-25 gives the best version of this account. This is a private briefing and only four of the disciples are involved- Peter, Andrew, James, John. The disciples ask Jesus three questions: 1. When would the Temple be destroyed? 2. What would be the sign of His coming? 3. What would be the sign of the end of the age? Although they realize he will be coming back, they do not recognize that he will suffer and be killed very soon. The Olivet Discourse is important because it is covered in three of the four gospels. Jesus doesnt discuss the destruction of the Temple in too much detail. The disciples assumed the destruction of Temple the Second Coming, and the End of the Age would be at the same time. However the disciples idea that all three were at the same time was an incorrect assumption. Remember when Luke is writing to gentiles, Luke omits some of the details that Matthew covers that Luke leaves out. Luke records 4 topics of the destruction of Israel. 27 | P a g e

The The The The

description of the Age (verses 8-19) destruction of the Temple (20-24) return of the Lord (25-28) responsibilities of the believer (29-38)

In Matthew, Mark and Luke Jesus tells us not to be deceived. Do not fear or be terrified of great wars for these things must take place first. Jesus says nation will rise up against nation. In responding to question 1 (When would the Temple be destroyed?), he doesnt go into too much detail. However it would be destroyed just 38 years later in 70AD. In responding to question 2 (What would be the sign of his coming?), Jesus says from Mark 13:24-27, 33-37 that when the Sun is darkened and the moon will not give light, and the stars will fall from heaven. The ending of the times of the Gentiles will commence when Jesus comes back and reigns again on Earth during the Great Tribulation. In responding to question 3 (What would be the sign for the end of the age?), Jesus then speaks of the Parable of the Fig Tree. The parable of the Fig Tree is covered in Luke 13. The fig tree is used as a symbolic representation of Israel. Do we bear fruit? Either we will bear fruit, or if we dont the tree will cut down. When the branch is tender and when you can begin to essentially seeing the formation of the leaves, spring is very near and is coming. The history of the Fig Tree is an idiomatic image of Israel. Israel is putting forth leaves, but hasnt bore fruit. In other words, when Israel petitions Jesus to return is a sign that his return is near. When you see these signs, the end of the age is near and Jesus will come back and reign as King for 1000 years. We should not confuse the description of the Coming of the Son of Man as the rapture here. Verse 27 says every eye will see him. Therefore since Jesus is seen, it means it is the Second Coming. The rapture describes a scene where Jesus coms like a thief in a night and that situation is not described here. Jesus tells us the responsibilities of the believer, Jesus then tells us to be awake and ready and for us not to be earth dwellers. Luke 22 The plot to kill Jesus, Judas to betray Jesus, The Passover and the disciples, Lords Supper, Who is the Greatest, Jesus foretells Peters denial, scripture must be fulfilled in Jesus, Jesus prays on the Mount of Olives, Betrayal and arrest of Jesus, Jesus is mocked, Jesus before the Council. The chiefs and scribes were deriving a plot to kill Jesus. In the Matthew gospel, the high priest Caiaphas wanted Jesus killed, but not during Passover because it would it would create an uproar. Judas conferred with one of the priests and asks how he might betray Jesus. They were pleased and gave him money (30 pieces of silver according to Matthews gospel). There is a 28 | P a g e

prophecy where the Messiah would be betrayed for 30 pieces of silver. I said to them, "If it is good in your sight, give me my wages; but if not, never mind!" So they weighed out thirty shekels of silver as my wages. Then the LORD said to me, "Throw it to the potter, that magnificent price at which I was valued by them." So I took the thirty shekels of silver and threw them to the potter in the house of the LORD- Zechariah 11:12-13. Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb has to be sacrificed. Luke is a Gentile and isnt as precise as a Jew would be on these days. Passover is actually the day before the feast of Unleavened Bread. The lamb is killed on the 14th of Nisan. The Passover is sundown to sundown. Jesus gives Peter and John arrangements on where to go prepare the Passover meal which would be the Last Supper. Jesus initiates the Last Supper. Jesus breaks the bread and drinks the wine from the cup. Jesus then breaks the news that one of the disciples at the table will betray him. In the Matthew gospel while at the Last Supper, Judas and Jesus have a conversation at the table: Judas, who would betray him, answered, "Is it I, Rabbi?" He said to him, You have said so." Matthew 26:25. Psalm 41:9 prophesizes the Lords betrayal. The disciples then get a discussion going on who is the greatest apostle. Jesus said the greatest is the one who serves (I still need to focus on serving) and those who have stayed with Jesus will eat and drink at his table in heaven and sit on thrones judging the 12 tribes of Israel. Jesus then tells Peter he will deny him three times before the rooster crows. Jesus then says the scriptures will be fulfilled with him. Jesus then goes to The Mount of Olives takes the disciples and beings to pray. Matthews gospel account is more detailed where we learn Jesus goes to Gethsemane and takes with him Peter, James and John only. Jesus goes to the Mount of Olives and prays to the Father about inquiring to see if there is any other way to basically save humanity and get out from the crucifixion, but he is willing to do whatever the Father called him to do. By Jesus dying at the cross, there is no other way for us to be saved because if that was the case, his death would be in vain. Only in the Luke version did it mention that an angel came to Jesus to strengthen him during his prayer. He continued praying more earnestly as sweat became like great drops of blood falling to the ground. When he arose from prayer he finds the disciples sleeping and asks them to rise and pray that they may not enter into temptation. While Jesus was still speaking, there came a crowd and Judas was leading them. Judas drew near to Jesus to kiss him and Jesus asks him if he would betray the son of Man with a kiss? In the Matthew gospel, we learn that Judas referred to Jesus as Rabbi, not Lord. When the disciples saw what was happening around him, one of the disciples (we know its Peter from Johns gospel) strikes the servant cutting off his right ear. Jesus healed the mans ear and told the disciples that he would have no more of this. The chief priests and elders then grabbed Jesus bringing him into the high priests house, and He 29 | P a g e

asks the crowd if they had forgotten the time He taught them? The priest calls two witnesses that misquote Jesus, and when the priests ask Jesus to speak, he does not (See Isaiah 53:7). He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth. Jesus is then tried but his arrest and trial was completely illegal.
The binding of a prisoner before he was condemned unless resistance was offered was illegal- and Jesus offered none. It was illegal for the judge to participate in the arresting of the accused, and they were the ones doing it. No legal transactions including a trial could occur at night. No prisoner could be convicted on his own evidence. Jesus was tried because he said he was God. The judges sought false witnesses against Jesus. In the Jewish court, the accused is considered innocent until they get two or more witnesses. When the witnesses first disagreed, the prisoner should have been dismissed. No witnesses were ever called for the defense. The trial took place in a home versus trial chamber which was illegal. The court lacked the civil authority to convict a man to death. It was illegal to conduct a court trial on Passover. A guilty verdict was issued with no evidence. While an acquittal could come on the same day, a guilty verdict required a majority of two on a subsequent day. No prisoner could be convicted on his own evidence.

We learn in the Luke gospel that the high priest tears Jesus clothes- Luke 26:65. In Leviticus 21:10 says that a priest should never tear anyones clothes. The priest who is the highest among his brothers, on whose head the anointing oil has been poured and who has been consecrated to wear the garments, shall not uncover his head nor tear his clothes. Peter was following at a distance. Peter then on three separate occasions denied he knew Jesus, and on the third denial the Lord looked at Peter and the rooster crowed. Peter then wept bitterly. The men that were holding Jesus in custody began mocking him as they beat him. The next day (Wednesday morning), Jesus then comes before the Council. The high priests ask Jesus if he is the Christ, and Jesus responds if he tells them he is, they will not believe. They then ask if he is the Son of God, and Jesus responds You say that I am. The priests then said what further testimony did they need? They have heard it from Jesus own lips. The religious trial is over, and the criminal trial is next.

Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. Luke 22:24-26 Luke 23 Jesus before Pilate, Jesus before Herod, Pilate delivers Jesus to be crucified, the crucifixion, the death of Jesus, Jesus is buried. Jesus was brought before Pilate and he was accused of blasphemy. In previous years, a person that was guilty of blasphemy was subject to death. The Jewish government lost that power years before however because they were under the leadership of Rome. Pilate was the governor of Judea from AD26 to AD36. Pilate asked Jesus if he was King of the Jews and Jesus answered him saying you have said so. Pilate said he found no guilt in this man. However Pilate did not want to deal with a potential Jewish mob if he was to release Jesus. Since Jesus was a Galilean, he sent the trial over to Herod Antipas because Galilee was Herod Antipas jurisdiction. Since it was Passover, Herod was also in Jerusalem. This was the same Herod that murdered John the Baptist. Herod began questioning Jesus, but he did not respond. The chief priests and scribes continued to accuse him. However Jesus did not defend himself or quarrel with the technicalities or that his arrest was illegal and fulfills the Isaiah 53 prophecy: He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth. Isaiah 53:7. Herod however does not find Jesus guilty and sent Jesus back to Pilate to deal with. Pilate again said he did not find this man guilty of any crime. Pilate said on seven different occasions that Jesus was innocent. However the Jews kept screaming to crucify him and their voices prevailed and asked instead that they release Barabbas. Pilate delivered Jesus over to their will. Jesus was then crucified. Marks gospel suggests that Jesus was crucified around 9AM for around six hours. The KJV and ESV says from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over the land. The sixth hour is not 6AM but noon and NIV agrees and uses noon instead of the sixth hour. Apparently the day on the Jewish calendar begins at 6AM. So therefore there is darkness over the land from noon until 3PM. Many Christians believe that Jesus was crucified on a Friday. However Biblical evidence points that the crucifixion happened on a Wednesday. Matthew tells us: For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Matthew 12:40. You cannot get three days and three nights from a Friday to a Sunday. The Jewish day begins at 31 | P a g e

6PM, not at midnight. We also want to keep in mind that the 14th of Nisan every year is Passover- In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at twilight, is the LORD's Passover. Leviticus 23:5. The Triumphal Entry was on a Saturday (6PM Friday 6PM Saturday). This Saturday is also the 10th of Nisan. The 10th of Nisan coincides with April 6, 32 AD from Daniels 70 Weeks. The 14th of Nisan was a Wednesday (Tuesday 6PM to Wednesday 6PM). This 14th of Nisan as mentioned before was the Passover day. On this 14th of Nisan, Jesus took part in the Last Supper, he was arrested in the Garden after Judas betrayal. After several trials on Wednesday morning, he was beaten and finally crucified taking his last breath on Wednesday afternoon around 3PM. Jesus was resurrected sometime around Saturday night 6PM or on the Jewish calendar which is now Sunday. The Saturday would be the 17th of Nisan. For our own understanding, we can think of the Jewish calendar beginning six hours early, and ending six hours early as well. Our 7PM Wednesday night is Thursday on the Jewish calendar as is 5PM Thursday. The day begins at 6PM and ends at 5:59PM the next day. On a miscellaneous note, Noahs flood was ended on the 17th of Nisan. Our new beginning in Christ was the anniversary of Earths new beginning under Noah!

Jesus was buried near sundown on Wednesday, which began Thursday in the Jewish calendar. Using a Jewish calendar, you have Thursday night (night one), Thursday day (day one), Friday night (night two), Friday day (day two), Saturday night (night three), Saturday day (day three). We do not know exactly when He rose, but we do know that it was before sunrise on Sunday (John 20:1, Mary Magdalene came while it was still dark), so He could have risen as early as Saturday evening around when the day was changing over to Sunday (6PM), which began the first day of the week to the Jews. During that time, the Jews continued to mock Jesus. There was a written notice above him, which read: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. If you want to strip away salvation to its barest essentials see verses 39-43. Here is a criminal hung on the cross next to Jesus who had done nothing noteworthy in his life, and he turned to Christ asking him to remember him. Jesus then gave him salvation. It was about the sixth hour Jesus breathed his last breath. The centurion (leaders in the Roman army) proclaimed Jesus was innocent. The crowds returned home beating their chests. Jesus was then buried. There was a man named Joseph who was a righteous man who went to Pilate and asked for Jesus body. He was allowed to take his body. One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, "Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!" But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong." And he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." And he said to him, "Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise." Luke 23:39-43

Luke 24 The Resurrection, Jesus incognito on the road to Emmaus, Jesus appears to his disciples, The Ascension. On Sunday at early dawn they went to the tomb. Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Joanna and another girl found the stone rolled away from the tomb but they did not find the body of Jesus. The Mary referred to here as Mary the mother of James is Jesus mother. The angels rolled the stone away not to let Jesus out, but to let everyone else in. The girls were frightened and two men in dazzling apparel (2 angels) asked them why they seek the living among the dead? This question was asked because Jesus isnt there, but has risen. The angels asked the girls if they remembered that Jesus said he would be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified and would rise on the third day? The girls remembered and then told the eleven apostles, but they did not believe them. In Marks gospel, Jesus rebuked the apostles for their unbelief. The girls challenge them to go check it out themselves. But Peter ran the tomb and 33 | P a g e

looked inside of it, and saw the linen clothes left behind, and went home marveling what happened. According to John 20, Jesus first appeared to Mary Magdalene. Next two disciples Cleopas and another, (not one of the 11, but very close disciples) walk along talking 7 miles on their way to Emmaus. An apparent stranger draws near them who is Jesus, but he is not recognized because Jesus is incognito. The stranger (Jesus) notices that these two men are sad asks them what is wrong? Cleopas responds to the stranger if he was only a visitor and isnt aware of what happened in Jerusalem in the past couple of days? The stranger looks them in the eye with a straight face and responds what things? Cleopas responds on how Jesus of Nazareth was crucified by the chief priests. They also tell the stranger that they did not find his body at the tomb and some said they saw angels who said he was alive. The stranger speaks in the third person calling them foolish for being slow to believe what the prophets have spoken. He then asks wasnt it necessary that Christ suffer these things? We can think of this discussion as a seven mile Bible Study as Jesus expounded on to them with all things concerning him. The disciples were impressed with the stranger and ask him to dinner. The stranger accepts the invitation to dinner and he broke the bread and blessed it and gave it to them. In a Jewish house, only the host should break the bread and bless it, not the guest. This guest however blessed the bread. At that point, the disciples eyes are open and they realize who has been accompanying them as their teacher over the past seven miles. We know Jesus has the nail prints because he will show Thomas these marks later on in Johns gospel. Once the disciples recognized him, he vanished from their site. The stranger evaporates from their eyes. These two disciples then went immediately back to Jerusalem to inform the eleven (eleven is a title for the eleven apostles, except Thomas was not there) about their story and that the Lord has risen! As they were talking about these things, Jesus appears to them and says peace to you. They were however frightened and thought they saw a spirit. Jesus then asks them why they are troubled and why doubts arise in their hearts? Jesus says a spirit does not have flesh and bones and he showed them his hands and feet. Jesus then asks them if they have anything to eat and the disciples give him broiled fish. Jesus says all things will be fulfilled by the Prophets and in the book of Psalms. Jesus then led them out to Bethany (east side of Mt of Olives) and he lifted up his hands and he blessed them. While he blessed them, he parted from them and ascended into heaven. The ascension was 40 days after Easter Sunday. In John 14, Jesus says while ascending into heaven, that he is preparing a place for us. The disciples worshipped him and they returned to Jerusalem with great joy. They were continually in the Temple blessing God. Luke opened his gospel with a scene from the Temple, and he closes his gospel the same way, in the Temple. 34 | P a g e
