Lesson Plan in Math 11 Intermediate Algebra

Time Frame: 1 hour Date : Dec. 12, 2012

Learning Objectives: Recall important concepts in adding/subtracting similar fractions Add/subtract rational expressions Develop self-confidence in rational expression with speed and accuracy through practice exercises Learning Contents: Adding/subtracting rational expression

References: E-math Intermediate Algebra II by Orlando A. Orance and Marilyn O. Mendoza pp. 218-221 Materials: Skills: Value Focus: Learning Experiences: Introduction: Conduct a review on addition/subtraction similar fractions Have a short drill on solving similar fractions through board work Group Activity - Divide the class into three groups. Give them counters and distribute the activity cards. - Each group should have one secretary and one reporter. Manila Paper, chalk, chalkboard, eraser, scotch tape Adding/Subtracting rational expressions Self-confidence, teamwork and cooperation

Interaction: A. Processing the group activity After the group activity, process it using the following questions: - What did you feel while solving rational expression? B. Discussion Using some of the examples posted on the board, discuss the following: - How to add/subtract rational expressions - How to factor them out to simplify the answer C. Board Work Let the students solve rational expression. Just call volunteers to write the answer on the board. - How did you arrive at your solutions? D. Generalization Let the students state the important concept in adding/subtracting rational expressions. - What are the steps involve in adding/subtracting rational expressions with like denominators. - In what real life situations do we apply the concept of adding/subtracting rational expressions? Give examples. Integration: Let the students add/subtract rational expressions on the board.
