Chapter 1: Introduction to Chemistry

1 2 3 4 Chemistry Scientific Method Making observation Making inference Is the study of the composition, structure, properties and interactions of matter? Is a systematic method used to solve problems in science. Gathering information about a phenomenon using our five senses Making a mart guess or a tentative explanation about the phenomenon based on the observation 5 6 Identifying problem Making hypothesis Asking questions based on the inference made. Making a general statement about the relationship between a manipulated variable and a responding variable in order to explain the question asked. 7 Identifying variables Identifying the manipulated, responding and fixed variables of an experiment to test the hypothesis made. 8 Controlling variables Deciding how to manipulate the chosen variable, what to measure and how to keep the fixed variables constant. 9 Planning an experiment 10 Determine what materials and apparatus to use, the exact procedure of the experiment, the method of collecting data and ways to analyses and interpret the collected data. Collecting data Making observations or measurement and then recording the data

systematically. 11 Interpreting data Organising and analyzing data. Calculations, graphs or charts may be drawn to look for any relationship between the variables. 12 Making conclusion Making a statement about the outcome of the experiment and whether the hypothesis is accepted or rejected. 13 Writing report Communicating the details of the experiment to spread and find a benefit to the findings.
