7th - Comparing Literature, "After Twenty Years"

1. dismally: In a gloomy or depressed manner 2. egotism: conceit; talking about oneself too much 3. First-person point of view: The narrator is a character in the story who can reveal only personal thoughts and feelings and what he or she sees and is told by other characters. He can't tell us thoughts of other characters. 4. foreshadowing: the use of hints and clues to suggest what will happen later in a plot 5. habitual: done on a regular basis 6. intricate: complicated; difficult to understand 7. Mood: overall feeling of a story, poem, or other work of literature. 8. omniscient point of view: the narrator is capable of knowing, telling, and seeing all 9. Point of view: Who is the narrator? Who is telling the story? 10. simultaneously: at the same time 11. Theme: The main idea or meaning of a text. Often, this is an insight about human life revealed in a literary work 12. third-person point of view: A perspective that presents the events of the story from outside of any single character's perception
