ABSTRACT Nashifudin, Mohammad. 2012.

The Application of Visual Aid of Starter System in Teaching Overhaul and Testing Competence in Reduction Type of Starter Motor Machine. Final Project. Mechanical Engineering Major, Engineering Faculty, State University of Semarang. First Advisor: Hadromi, S. Pd., M.T., Second Advisor: Wahyudi, S. Pd., M. Eng. The objective of this study are to construct a visual aid of reductive starter machine to help teacher in conducting teaching and learning process especially in teaching over haul and starter motor testing competence for reduction type, to know the students improvements in over haul and motor starter testing competence after using the visual aid of reductive starter machine. The students improvements in starter motor competence are indicated by the students achievement in experimental group. The students in experimental group which was taught using starter motor for reduction type got improvement around 32,46 %. While the students improvement in control group only achieved 9,49 % among pretest and post test. Moreover, the students in experimental group were able to improve their competence in overhaul about 23,17% and 48,59% for testing competence. In contrast, the students in control group only slightly enabled to get improvement in overhaul competence around 10,29% and 16,67% for testing competence. Based on the findings, this study shows that the using of a visual aid of starter system machine for reduction type in teaching overhaul and testing competence is much better than using custom type of starter system machine because it has a set of components system that enable teacher not to explain the location of each components in starter motor anymore. Then, the reduction type of starter system motor also has terminals which help students to conduct testing. So it will be more efficient by using starter system motor in reduction type. Keywords: visual aid, overhaul, testing, and reduction type of starter system motor.
