A Note From the Publisher:

Greetings All!
We are delighted to announce the publication of the 2013 Persian Yellow Pages and Directory of North
Texas and Oklahoma. We offer deep thanks to our advertisers and our community, because of your
contribution, support, and encouragement that enable us to continue doing what we love to do and serve
our growing community. The Persian Yellow Pages and Shahrvand Publication is proud to be the voice of
our business community, and we look forward to another year filled with continued support of one another
to help expand, strengthen, and propel our dynamic community.
As a community of highly educated people with entrepreneurship spirits and strong buying power,
investing in this community leads to success. This year we have made numerous changes to our website
www.zardpages.com, allowing for a more interactive and user friendly experience. Starting in January
2013 we will have one landing page for all business advertising with us with links to their websites. With
this effort alone we are providing increased online visibility to our customers as well as optimizing search
engine presence. Additionally, our business directory has been expanded to encompass more businesses as
well as simplifying the search allowing visitors to find what they need quicker and easier than ever before.
With your support, the Persian Yellow Pages and Shahrvand Publication continue to be the best value for
your adverting dollars.

Sincerely,
Parvin Koohgilani

in 2002, and $54.2

The ability to

intimidated a large

The
Life Time concept
was more inviting
and
convenient,
especially for parents
with children.
Chicago Entry in 2000
In 2000, Life Time began
using its current model center,
105,000 square feet in size. Also
during this year, the company
conducted its largest round of
equity financing, taking in $45 million, the financing
managed by U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray and once
again led by Norwest Equity Partners. New Yorkbased Patricof & Co. Ventures Inc. also participated.
At this stage, Norwest owned about 35 percent of Life
Time, Arkadi and other employees around 20 percent,
and Patricof 15 percent. Another major step taken in
2000 was Life Times entry into the Chicago market.
By the end of the year, the chain was operating 21
clubs and revenues totaled $92.9 million.
More than just expanding its geographic reach, Life
Time began looking beyond the operation of health
clubs to becoming a true health-and-fitness brand.

With Credit Suisse First

Boston and Merrill Lynch
serving as co-managers and
Piper Jaffray acting as an
underwriter, Life Time completed its initial public
offering of stock in June 2004, raising $183 million.
According to the company, the main reason for going
public was to establish a market for its stock, which
would allow equity partners like Norwest to realize

to sustain its pattern of strong and steady growth.

In 1996, Life Time forged such a relationship, the

city which the company leased, Life Time built a

an eight-lane competition pool, diving pool, indoor
and outdoor leisure pools, two basketball courts,
two gyms, an aerobics room, racquetball courts, and
160 pieces of cardiovascular equipment and 120
resistance-training machines. The facility was owned

Company History:
Life Time Fitness, Inc., operates more than 35 largeformat sports, athletic, fitness, and family recreation
centers. The publicly traded company is based in
Eden Prairie, Minnesota, a state that is home to 14
Life Time centers. Illinois, with seven centers, is the
next largest area of operation for the chain, followed
by Michigan with five, Arizona, Texas, and Virginia
with two, and single locations in Indiana and Ohio.
Life Time takes a big box approach to
health clubs, using a model center that
exceeds 100,000 square feet in size and has
a target capacity of 11,500 memberships.
About one-third of the units conform to this model,
and another dozen are also large-format centers.
Because of their size, the resort-style centers are able
to offer a wide variety of sports, fitness, and family
recreation programs and services at rates below the
industry average. Life Time offers swimming pools
with water slides, racquet ball courts, basketball
courts, climbing walls, and large numbers of weight
training stations and cardiovascular equipment. The
centers also provide free child care and childrens
activities, including small gyms, playground
equipment, televisions, and even computer labs

Life Time is also attempting to leverage its

brand name, publishing a magazine, Experience
Life, and developing a line of apparel, nutritional,
and other products.

Elections & Voting

One of the most important rights of American
citizens is the franchise the right to vote.

clauses, and literacy tests, African Americans were

not assured full voting rights until President Lyndon
Baines Johnson signed the Voting Rights
Act in 1965.
Women were denied the right
to vote until 1920, when the
Nineteenth
Amendment
was passed. Prior to that,
women had only been
able to vote in select
states.
Federal
elections
occur every two
years, on the first
Tuesday after the
first Monday in
November.
Every
member of the House
of Representatives and
about one-third of the
Senate is up for reelection
in any given election year.
A presidential election is held
every fourth year.
Federal elections are administered by state
and local governments, although the specifics of how
elections are conducted differ between the states. The
Constitution and laws of the United States grant the
states wide latitude in how they administer elections.

Originally
under
the
Constitution, only white
male citizens over
the age of 21 were
eligible to vote.
This
shameful
injustice
has
been corrected
and
voting
rights
have
been extended
several times
over the course
of our history.
Today, citizens
over the age of 18
cannot be denied
the right to vote,
regardless of race,
religion, sex, disability, or
sexual orientation. However,
in every state except North Dakota,
citizens must register to vote, and laws regarding
the registration process vary by state.
The path to full voting rights for all American
citizens was long and often challenging. The
franchise was first extended to African Americans
under the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments to
the Constitution, passed during the Reconstruction
period after the Civil War. These guaranteed that all
male citizens, regardless of their race, would receive
equal treatment under the law and not be deprived
of their rights without due process. The Fifteenth
Amendment is specifically dedicated to protecting
the right of all citizens to vote, regardless of their
race.
For practical purposes, this was not the end of
the voting rights struggle for African Americans.
Because of widespread discrimination in some
states, including the use of poll taxes, grandfather

district court cases.
Federal judges can only be
removed through impeachment
by the House of Representatives
and conviction in the Senate.
Judges and justices serve no
fixed term they serve until
their death, retirement, or
conviction by the Senate. By
design, this insulates them
from the temporary passions of
the public, and allows them to
apply the law with only justice
in mind, and not electoral or
political concerns.
Generally, Congress determines
the jurisdiction of the federal courts. In some cases,
however such as in the example of a dispute
between two or more U.S. states the Constitution
grants the Supreme Court original
jurisdiction, an authority that
cannot be stripped by Congress.
The courts only try actual
cases and controversies
a party must show that
it has been harmed in
order to bring suit in
court. This means that
the courts do not issue
advisory opinions on
the
constitutionality
of laws or the legality
of actions if the ruling
would have no practical
effect.
Cases
brought
before the judiciary typically
proceed from district court to
appellate court and may even end at
the Supreme Court, although the Supreme
Court hears comparatively few cases each year.

Where the Executive and Legislative branches

are elected by the people,
members of the Judicial Branch are appointed
by the President and confirmed by the
Senate.
Article III of the Constitution,
which
establishes
the
Judicial Branch, leaves
Congress
significant
discretion to determine
the shape and structure
of the federal judiciary.
Even the number of
Supreme Court Justices
is left to Congress at
times there have been
as few as six, while the
current number (nine, with
one Chief Justice and eight
Associate Justices) has only been
in place since 1869. The Constitution
also grants Congress the power to establish
courts inferior to the Supreme Court, and to that end
Congress has established the United States district
courts, which try most federal cases, and 13 United
States courts of appeals, which review appealed

The Legislative Branch

Established by Article I of the Constitution, the

Legislative Branch consists of the House of
Representatives and the Senate, which together
form the United States Congress.
The Constitution grants Congress the sole authority
to enact legislation and declare war, the right to
confirm or reject many Presidential appointments,
and substantial investigative powers.
The House of Representatives is made up of 435
elected members, divided among the 50 states in
proportion to their total population. In addition, there
are 6 non-voting members, representing the District
of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico,
and four other territories of the United States. The
presiding officer of the chamber is the Speaker of the
House, elected by the Representatives. He or she is
third in the line of succession to the Presidency.
Members of the House are elected every two years
and must be 25 years of age, a U.S. citizen for at
least seven years, and a resident of the state (but not
necessarily the district) they represent.
The House has several powers assigned exclusively
to it, including the power to initiate revenue bills,
impeach federal officials, and elect the President in
the case of an electoral college tie.

Amendment in
1913, Senators
were chosen by
state legislatures,
not by popular
vote. Since then,
they have been
elected to sixyear terms by the
people of each
state. Senators
terms are
staggered so that
about one-third of
the Senate is up
for reelection every two years. Senators must be 30
years of age, U.S. citizens for at least nine years,
and residents of the state they represent.
The Vice President of the United States serves as
President of the Senate and may cast the decisive
vote in the event of a tie in the Senate.
The Senate has the sole power to confirm those
of the Presidents appointments that require
consent, and to ratify treaties. There are, however,
two exceptions to this rule: the House must also
approve appointments to the Vice Presidency and
any treaty that involves foreign trade. The Senate
also tries impeachment cases for federal officials
referred to it by the House.
In order to pass legislation and send it to the
President for his signature, both the House and the
Senate must pass the same bill by majority vote. If
the President vetoes a bill, they may override his
veto by passing the bill again in each chamber with
at least two-thirds of each body voting in favor.

Air Force One

The Executive Branch

No matter where in the world the President travels,

if he flies in an Air Force jet, the plane is called
Air Force One. Technically, Air Force One is the
call sign of any Air Force aircraft carrying the
President. In practice, however, Air Force One
is used to refer to one of two highly customized
Boeing 747-200B series aircraft, which carry
the tail codes 28000 and 29000. The Air Force
designation for the aircraft is VC-25A.
Air Force One is one of the most recognizable
symbols of the presidency, spawning countless
references not just in American culture but across
the world. Emblazoned with the words United
States of America, the American flag, and the
Seal of the President of the United States, it is an
undeniable presence wherever it flies.

The power of the Executive Branch is vested in

the President of the United States, who also acts
as head of state and Commander-in-Chief of the
armed forces. The President is responsible for
implementing and enforcing the laws written by
Congress and, to that end, appoints the heads of the
federal agencies, including the Cabinet. The Vice
President is also part of the Executive Branch, ready
to assume the Presidency should the need arise.
The Cabinet and independent federal agencies are
responsible for the day-to-day enforcement and
administration of federal laws. These departments
and agencies have missions and responsibilities
as widely divergent as those of the Department
of Defense and the Environmental Protection
Agency, the Social Security Administration and the
Securities and Exchange Commission.
Including members of the armed forces, the
Executive Branch employs more than 4 million
Americans.

The OVAL Office

The Oval Office is the official office of the

President of the United States.
The office was designed by the architect Nathan C.
Wyeth at the order ofPresident William Howard Taft
in 1909. Named for its distinctive oval shape, the
Oval Office is part of the complex of offices that
make up the West Wing of the White House. Badly
damaged by a fire in 1929, the office was rebuilt
by President Herbert C. Hoover. In 1934, President
Franklin D. Roosevelt enlarged the West Wing and

those who attended the swearing-in ceremony at the

U.S. Capitol simply followed him home, where he
greeted them in the Blue Room. President Jefferson
also opened the house for public tours, and it
has remained open, except during wartime, ever
since. In addition, he welcomed visitors to annual
receptions on New Years Day and on the Fourth of
July. After Abraham Lincolns presidency, Inaugural
crowds became far too large for the White House to
accommodate them comfortably. However, not until
Grover Clevelands first presidency did this unsafe
practice change. He held a presidential review of the
troops from a flag-draped grandstand built in front of
the White House. This procession evolved into the
official Inaugural parade we know today. Receptions
on New Years Day and the Fourth of July continued
to be held until the early 1930s.

Presidents generally change the office to suit their

personal taste. Paintings are selected from the White
Houses own collection, or borrowed from other
museums for the Presidents term in office.
The President uses the Oval Office as his primary
place of work. It is positioned to provide easy
access to his staff in the West Wing and to allow him
to retire easily to the White House residence at the
end of the day. The President commonly chooses the
Oval Office as the backdrop for televised addresses
to the nation, and countless foreign leaders have
traveled to the office to meet with the President.

the United States government, and the American

people. Its history, and the history of the nations
capital, began when President George Washington
signed an Act of Congress in December of 1790
declaring that the federal government would reside
in a district not exceeding ten miles squareon
the river Potomac. President Washington, together
with city planner Pierre LEnfant, chose the site for
the new residence, which is now 1600 Pennsylvania
Avenue. As preparations began for the new federal
city, a competition was held to find a builder of the
Presidents House. Nine proposals were submitted,
and Irish-born architect James Hoban won a gold
medal for his practical and handsome design.

The White House has a unique and

fascinating history

Construction began when the first cornerstone

was laid in October of 1792

It survived a fire at the hands of the British in 1814

(during the war of 1812) and another fire in the West
Wing in 1929, while Herbert Hoover was President.
Throughout much of Harry S. Trumans presidency,
the interior of the house, with the exception of the
third floor, was completely gutted and renovated
while the Trumans lived at Blair House, right across
Pennsylvania Avenue. Nonetheless, the exterior
stone walls are those first put in place when the
White House was constructed two centuries ago.

Although President Washington oversaw the

construction of the house, he never lived in it. It was
not until 1800, when the White House was nearly
completed, that its first residents, President John
