Charles Darwin During their time, it was commonly believed that God created the world in seven days as mentioned in the Bible. This influenced Darwin to establish the natural selection together with the thoughts of evolution of his grandfather, Erasmus Darwin and other famous scientists like Jean Baptiste Lamarck, Thomas Malthus, Comte de Buffon, Charles Lyell. Darwin was extremely interested in biology and geology. So instead of studying medicine he started studying natural history. During his stay in a Christs college, he had a beetle collection and his love for nature was further developed. This maybe triggered further his keen interest to the natural science thus he was given the chance to cruise around the world and he was able to collect natural specimens and observe different kinds of flora and fauna. As Darwin uncovers the origin of life, he come up with The Theory of Natural Selection wherein organisms with traits suited to its environment has a better chance of surviving and reproducing than those that are not suited. Hence, organisms with favorable traits have greater chance of passing their genes to the next generation. Natural selection believes the idea that organisms tend to produce vast number of offspring which vary in their traits. If all offspring were to survive and reproduce this would cause overproduction which individual organisms will struggle for existence. This struggle for existence will result to the survival of the fittest. The fittest will pass its genes to the next generation and a gradual adaptation to its changing environment.
