Technology Integration Unit/Lesson Plan Template (modified from MTS Lesson Plan Template) Lesson title: Vocabulary/Key Terms Keynotes or Movies Name: Damian Fraser Subject area: Vocabulary/Word Analysis; can be used in other Content Areas for vocab or terminology Grade level: 6th Time frame: 2 days to a week Brief lesson/unit Summary/Description Students will work alone or in groups of 2-3 (group work is preferable, depending on resources and time) to create a Keynote presentation, or Quicktime/iMovie, which illustrates examples of correct usages and meanings of specific vocabulary words, idioms, or content-specific terms or concepts. State Content Standard/Benchmark addressed http://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/index.asp 6th Grade: WS 1.1, 1.5; Reading 1.2, Reading 1.3, Reading 1.4; Educational Technology Standard/Benchmark addressed http://www.iste.org/standards.aspx 21 Century Skill(s)/Theme(s) addressed http://www.p21.org/route21/index.php Information, Media and Technology Skills Integration into NLMUSD Curriculum Maps (If applicable in Language arts or Math) Can be used for Word Study/Word Work; with content-specific vocabulary in any subject Students will understand (lesson/unit objectives): the meanings and correct usages of specific words derived from Greek or Latin roots; the correct metaphoric meanings of English idioms Essential Questions to guide this unit/lesson and focus teaching and learning: 1. Where and how are these words or idioms used? Do they occur in everyday life? 2.How would you explain these words or idioms to others, who dont know anything about them, in a way that will make them understand the words or idioms clearly? Technology & Web 2.0 resources needed (hardware and software, websites) Keynote or other presentation software; digital cameras or video cameras; internet access; iMovie or other movie-making software; music and sound effects, if desired Procedure (learning activities)/ lessons of unit Students are given a set of words derived from a specific Greek or Latin word root (man=hand; ped=foot; etc.), or a set of English idioms (let your hair down, etc.). They then must collect digital visual examples, either from Internet resources or of their own taking or creation, and use them to illustrate the correct usages and meanings of the words or idioms. This is done by uploading the pictures or videos to Keynote documents (or other presentation software document) presentation or movie-making software. My preference is that students create their own pictures or videos as illustrations. That way, they can gain experience using digital cameras and seeing the world around them on their own. Once projects are done, students share them with each other, and they also evaluate peers projects using specific criteria and guidelines. The evaluation forms have 4 categories in which projects are rated, each on a scale from 1-4; overall holistic scores are based on an average of these 4 scores. Students must also provide specific written feedback: at least one positive comment, and at least one constructive comment on an area that could be improved upon in future work. Students are given copies of their evaluations. The teacher uses peer evaluations in his/her own assessments. Assessment Method Students are assessed on a 4-point rubric that evaluates Content, Design & Art, Evidence of Planning and Revision (rough drafts and sketches should also be provided along with finished projects), and Writing Conventions. From these 4 scores, an overall score is averaged. Specific comments on project strengths and weaknesses must also be provided. Notes: (this area may list accommodations, differentiation, as well as other key information that may not fit into the categories above)
