WATER POLLUTION POWERPOINT PROJECT (100 POINTS)

The following is a list of elements that are also potential water pollutants: Antimony Arsenic Barium Beryllium Cadmium Chlorine Chromium Cobalt Copper Fluorine Lead Mercury Nickel Nitrogen (in the form of nitrate) Selenium Silver Thallium

For this project, you will research one of the elements listed above. You may work alone or in a group of two. The final product of your research will be a short Powerpoint presentation to be given in front of the class. You should make use of the internet as well as the books and periodicals available to you in the library. You must use at least one non-internet source in your research.

Your presentation must include the following:


Description 1. Name and chemical symbol/formula of the element (with at least one image) and a description of its physical properties. Include your name(s) on this slide. 2. History of the element 3. Uses of the element in industry/society 4. Toxic effects and symptoms on humans as well as plants and animals. Please include exposure limits with appropriate units (parts per million, parts per billion, etc). 5. How does the element enter the water supply? 6. What steps can be taken to reduce the presence of this element in our water supply? 7. Bibliography Minimum of 3 sources for individuals and 5 sources for groups Use proper MLA format (handouts are available in the library) Include at least one non-internet source (book, periodical, etc) 8. On your last slide, include 3-5 true/false questions that focus on your research. At the end of your presentation, you will have an opportunity to quiz your classmates on your element. 9. Other Instructions: Your presentation should contain pictures and images whenever possible. Images can easily be downloaded from websites or scanned from printed material. Include the source(s) of any images in your bibliography! Powerpoint slides should be colorful (but not too colorful) and easy to read. Use bullet points (rather than full sentences) and make sure the text is LARGE! As with all written work, this presentation should contain no spelling or grammatical errors. Make sure to have someone proofread your slides before the due date. Make sure you can define ALL TERMS used in your powerpoint slides. Dont include any information that youre unable to explain in detail. DO NOT copy and paste information directly from other websites. All text must be your own original work. (if you choose to quote a specific source, but you must give credit to the author).
