LOAD AND RESISTANCE FACTOR DESIGN (LRFD)

22 JANUARY 2013 RAJIV GANDHI INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, KOTTAYAM, KERALA

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

ASSOC PROF DR NARAYANAN SAMBU POTTY Dr Narayanan Sambu Potty acquired PhD in Civil Engineering from IIT Madras, India in 1998 for the work titled Improving Cyclone Resistant Characteristics of Roof Cladding of Industrial Sheds. His research focuses on steel and composite structures, offshore structures and construction management. Projects he has involved in include Rehabilitation of old bridges in Kerala, Improving Cyclone Resistant Characteristics of Roof Cladding of Industrial Sheds, Semi-Precast OPC concrete slabs, "LRFD Methodology for design of offshore platforms etc. He worked as SELECTION GRADE LECTURER in TKM College of Engineering, India, Visiting Lecturer in Physical Infrastructure Centre, Queensland University of Technology, Australia, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR in Universiti Malaysia Sabah and is currently with Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Malaysia and published over 100 papers and three books titled Introduction to Civil Engineering, Design of Steel Structures, and Wind Loads on Industrial Sheds. He has conducted courses on Disaster Mitigation An Update for Civil Engineers and Research Methodology for Postgraduate students

MAIN OBJECTIVES
Design codes have transitioned from the Working Stress Design to the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Design Specifications. As a structural or geotechnical engineer, how will this transition affect the design practice. This lecture will review the methodology, concepts and engineering basis for the new specifications and how they will be implemented. Lecture Topics Introduction / Comparison of WSD and LRFD Methodology of the LRFD specifications Basics of statistics, probability and reliability Determination of statistics of material properties and loads Specification of the design loads and design resistances Concepts of load combinations Calibration of load and Resistance factors Review of calibration for well known codes Comparison of designs using WSD, LSD and LRFD approaches tension, compression, bending, connections
