A Language for Poetry Quoted by National Geographic August 2008 Edition Ancient Iran: Inside A Nations Persian Soul

The poet Ferdowsi has been called Irans Homer. In the Shahnameh, or Book of Kings -his epic, 50,000-line poem completed in A.D. 1010. He captured the sweep of Persian history in characters both mythical and real. His work rejuvenated the Persian language, which had languished during centuries of Arab rule. Writing in medieval Persian using Arabic script, Ferdowsi laid the basis for modern Persian, or Farsi, and stoked the passion Iranians hold for their poets, including Rubi,

Hafez, and Omar Khayyam.
