ACS Cobham Grade 5 Reading Response Journal Rubric

Enrichment Level Level 1 Advanced


(Grades in the A range) In your journal you:
* began your journal entry with a sentence that clearly explains the subject of your written response * very clearly explained a valid interpretation of an element of the story, leaving no doubt about your opinions * have made insightful inferences about the literature that are directly related to your interpretation of the question * clearly stated specific evidence from the literature that directly supports your ideas and opinions * have written one or more complete paragraphs in order to fully communicate your ideas about the book * have written a response that is mostly free from errors in spelling, punctuation and sentence structure *clearly identified the topic and/or subject of your response early in the writing and used pronouns appropriately throughout the response

Level 2 Proficient
(Grades in the B range) In your journal you:
* began your journal response with a topic sentence or a reference to the question * explained a valid interpretation of an element of the story

Level 3 Basic
(Grades in the C range) In your journal you:
* began your journal response with a brief reference to the question or prompt * left some questions about your interpretation of an element of the story although the general idea is clear * included a basic or obvious inference that indirectly relates to the question * included a vague reference to something in the literature that may support your opinion * briefly stated your ideas about the question or prompt

Level 4 Minimal
(Redo) In your journal you:
* did not include any reference to the question or prompt * stated obvious facts about the story without any interpretation on your part * did not demonstrate understanding of the story beyond what was directly stated in the text * did not support your response with evidence from the text * did not write enough to communicate your ideas about the question or prompt * have written a response that includes basic and unacceptable errors in spelling, punctuation or sentence structure * did not properly identify the topic and/or subject of your response

In your journal you:


* established the premise of your journal response by writing a short introductory paragraph * demonstrated a thorough and in-depth understanding of the story by reflecting on personal experiences, feelings or opinions related to the topic * made connections between events or character actions from various points in the story that justify your statements and opinions about the question or prompt * made meaningful connections to an identified theme or important ideas from the book * demonstrated that you are a highly critical thinker that examines characters, plot, setting and literary devices effectively

* made a general inference about the literature that is relevant to your interpretation of the question * included a reference to something in the literature that provides support for your opinion * wrote one paragraph that adequately communicates your ideas about the book * have written a response that includes a few minor errors in spelling, punctuation or sentence structure * identified the topic and/or subject of your response and used pronouns appropriately throughout most of the response

* have written a response that includes some significant errors in spelling, punctuation or sentence structure * identified the topic and/or subject of your response
