Realism
All right, I said, Im glad its a girl. And I hope shell be a fool--thats the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool (17).
After Daisy learns that the sex of her new born baby is a girl, she is pleased because she wants a girl and hopes it would act like a fool. Because the vowel o in the word fool is repeated twice in the quote, it is an example of assonance. It emphasizes the type of person Daisy wants her daughter to be. thats the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool is a realistic statement because it portrays real-life situations where girls could act nave and foolish.

Romanticism
Thirtythe promise of a decade of loneliness, a thinning list of single men to know, a thinning briefcase of enthusiasm, thinning hair (135).
Nick had just turned thirty and describes the negative impacts of his turning-of-age. He states that many men are finding female companions and he longs for one. His statement depicts him as a hopeless romantic as he feels he should have already found himself a woman. His misery increases as he gets older and his physical features become less attractive as well. The repetition of the vowel i in thinning makes the quote an example of assonance. It emphasizes the decline of many aspects in Nicks aging life.
