Common Errors from Subject-Verb agreement exercises... 1) The dog or the cats are outside.

2) The cats or the dog is outside. --> When a compound subject contains both a singular and a plural noun or pronoun joined by OR or NOR, the verb should agree with the part of the subject that is nearer the verb. 1. The committee debates these questions carefully. 2. The committee lead very different lives in private. 3. The softball team usually practice every Saturday morning. --> Some nouns which are grammatically singular (collective nouns) may be followed by a plural verb form. Collective nouns take a singular verb form when the noun is referring to a unit (see sentence 1); they take a plural verb form when the noun is referring to individuals within the group (see sentences 2 and 3). The word CHILDREN is PLURAL. So is PEOPLE. 1. That collection of poems is Where The Sidewalk Ends. --> Book titles take a singular verb form. 1. The team and the band were on the eld. --> When the subject of a sentence is composed of 2 or more nouns or pronouns connected by and use a plural verb. Expressions of time, money and distance usually take a singular verb: Ten dollars is a great deal of money to a child. Ten kilometres is too far to walk. Six weeks is not long enough.
