A NOTE FROM MRS. WIGMOSTA

Welcome back to another exciting year here at Keaau Elementary School! This is my second year teaching 5th grade here at Keaau, after teaching math for two years in my home state of Washington. While we have lots of great activities and field trips planned for this year, I am most looking forward to getting to know all of the great thinkers here in Room F-110. We will be spending these first couple of weeks of school focusing on being community contributors, and getting back into the routines of school. Thank you for all of your support this year, and I cannot wait to meet all of you! - Mrs. Wigmosta

HOMEWORK EXPECTATIONS
Your student should be bringing home a takehome folder and planner every day containing their homework, important notes, and notes about their behavior that day. It will be your students responsibility to have you sign his or her folder nightly and make sure that you have seen any important papers in their take-home folder. If your student ever says that they dont have homework, the best place to look is in the take-home folder! Your students planner is also the quickest way to communicate quick notes to me. If you write something in your students planner, I will write something back to you, or call you by the following day.
Homework will be assigned to the students almost every day of the school year, with the exclusion of days before the Hawaii State Assessment. Most days the students will be assigned a reading SRA (a short reading story with questions they will have special folders for this assignment) and a page or two of what we are currently studying in math. In addition, if you have access to the internet I highly recommended that your student is spending some time on ALEKS or KidBiz.

CURRENT TOPICS
This space will be used to communicate what we are studying every month. Here is what we are eager to learn about in math and reading: Reading: The habits of good readers and how to use great reading strategies. This will be taught through a readers workshop format called The Daily 5 and CAF that targets the needs of each reader. Math: An introduction to algebra and solving for the unknown! In addition to the core subjects of math and reading your student will be participating in rotations for the last hour and half of everyday. During this time, the students will rotate between all of the fifth grade team to learn about social studies, science, art, P.E./Health, and drama/music.
