You have raised some excellent points regarding co-teaching in a general educational classroom. How you and your colleague treated all students should be modeled for all. Exp. Record #: 10939 Date submitted: 06/26/2012 Elizabeth Hogan approved on 06/28/2012 Cohort: UEN 2011

Field-Based Internship Reflection Form For Internship Experience Standard 1: Visionary Leadership; Standard 2: Instructional Leadership; Standard 3: Organizational Leadership; Standard 4: Collaborative Leadership; Standard 5: Ethical Leadership; Standard 6: Political Leadership Standard and Criteria 2.d Monitors/Evaluates Effective Curriculum/Instruction/Assessment Level Special Education Time Spent 5 hour(s) Note

Briefly describe this field-based internship experience, including your specific role (1/2 page). My specific role in this experience was the general education teacher. In one of the co-taught social studies sections there was going to be a new special ed. student joining. This student was recently identified and put on a IEP. The IEP called for co-taught sections of social studies and science. I already taught this student in a regular section. They were not performing well, and I agreed with the switch. I was fundamental in providing data as well as input during the initial IEP meeting. I assured the parent as well as the student that it would be very beneficial to make the switch. I made sure to keep comparable data to show the parent and the student after a couple weeks of switching classes. The data showed that switching to the co-taught class was beneficial and positive to both education of the student and self-confidence. The special ed. teacher was key in making this whole process work. I did not teach anything different but was able to adjust assignments, give extra time, and provide supplemental aids. Reflect on what you have learned from this experience, from mentor discussions, and how you will use this learning in future administrative leadership roles (no more than 1/2 page). I learned that data can be vital to making decisions. The student and parent were very hesistant to making the change to the co-taught class. I assured both of them that there would be no "label" applied to the student. The special ed. teacher who co-taught with me added to my credibility of treating all the students the same and being good at not drawing and special attention to "special needs" students. I put myself in their shoes and made it comfortable for them, treated them how I would like to be treated in that situation. The switch was very beneficial to the student and the parent. The parent was no longer frustrated with low grades, and happy that their child was getting the support they needed. I will use this experience in the future to remember that we as administrators have to think about how the parents/students are feeling in these overwhelming meetings sometimes.
