Question 2.9(A)
Calculate the final temperature of a sample of argon of mass 12g that is expanded reverseibly and adiabatically from 1
dm3 at 273.15K to 3 dm3.
solution:
Ti=273.15K
m =12g
Vi= 1 dm3
Vf= 3dm3
Tf=?
argon is a mono atomic gas,so:
Vcm=5/2 R
Vpm=3/2 R
Poisson = Vcm/Vpm
= (5/2R)/(3/2R)
= 5/3
Tf= Ti(Vi/Vf)^poisson-1
= 273.15(1R/3R)^(2/3-1)
=131.31K:cheer:

Question 1.9(a)
Calculate the mass of water vapour present in a room temperature of volume 400 dm3 that contains .air at 27 degree C
on a day when the relative humudity is 60%;)
Solution:)
V = 400 m3
T = 300 K
Humudity = 60%
Partial pressure of water vapour is 60% of the equilibrium vapour pressure at given temperature and standard pressure.
Vapour pressure at 27C= 3.579 x 10^3 Pa
P water vapour =o.6 x 3.579x 1063 Pa
=2147.88 Pa
n = PV/RT
= (2147.88Pa x400m3)/(8.3145J/Kmolx300K)
= 344.44 mol

m = M x mol
= 344.44x 18 g/mol
=6210 g
=6.21kg:woohoo:

the answer of 1.9a is correct. the answer of 2.9a (131K) is also correct but i dont know how you got that number from
that calculation. please calculte properly ! Dont only put that number bcoz you can get it in the end of atkin's book.
ok, to calculate the final temp for reversible adiabatic expansion, use eq 2.28a
Tf=Ti(Vi/Vf)^(1/c), where c is Cv,m/R and Cv,m is Cp,m - R.
Thus c = (Cp,m - R)/R, you can use the value of Cp,m in the data section in the atkin.
from obtained c, you can detemine Tf. The answer is 131K.
