and Mathematics L#: L00174550 Grade Level: Pre-K Cooperating Teacher: Amy Poole Lesson Title: Counting Caterpillars

1. Curriculum Standards Addressed: PKCC6b Understand that the last number name spoken tells the number of objects counted up to 10. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted. 2. Cross Curricular Connections: PKRL 7 With prompting and support, describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in which they appear (e.g., what moment in a story an illustration depicts, picture walks). 3. Instructional Objective(s) Criteria: Students will be given a numerals 1-10 and will have to count out the quantity, understanding that the last number given tells the number of objects counted. 4. Assessment(s) of the Objectives: Before: Know which students can count to 10 and recognize the numerals 0-10. During: Ask questions while reading; (for example, how many pieces of food are there? Is the caterpillar getting bigger? etc.) After: Have students break into small groups; three at a time. Explain that they will be counting up to ten using their fingers and finger paint. Collect worksheets when students are finished to further examine their understanding of the lesson. 5. Materials/Resources: Text- The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle Finger Paint- Red and Green Worksheet numbered 1-10 Assessment sheets for before, during and after the lesson

6. Prerequisites (Prior Knowledge): Students should be able to count to 20 by ones and identify and name numerals from 09 7. Procedures: Step 1: Introduce the text to class Today we are going to read a book called The Very Hungry Caterpillar. This book is about the stages of a caterpillars life. Do any of you know what caterpillars turn into? Step 2: Read Title of the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar and say who the author and the illustrator are. Step 3: Begin reading the book During the book, ask the students about the food the caterpillar eats and what they would eat if they were very hungry. Step 4: When finished reading the book, go back through the book and count out the food that the caterpillar ate. Step 5: Explain the activity the students will be doing when they break into small groups. Now that we can count to ten, I am going to give you an activity worksheet that has numbers on it. We will be using finger paint to count out the number on the paper and when were done, it will look like a caterpillar! We will use green to count out the number that we see and when we get to number 10 we will use red to give the caterpillar a head. If you need any help, I will be right there with you to guide you. Step 6: Call out 3 children for the first small group. Have the students sit at the kidney table at the front of the room. Give each student a worksheet and have finger paint ready. Explain one more time what each of the students should be doing with the paint and demonstrate. Step 7: Watch each student, helping them when needed, making sure they understand the numerals and their quantities. Ask questions such as what number does this box show? How many finger dots go inside of this row? Step 8: When students are finished, collect their worksheets to look over, and dismiss the students to their centers.

Step 9: Call another small group over and repeat step 6-8 until all students have done the activity. Step 10: Check each individual worksheet to see which students understood the lesson. 8.
