PRONOUN PROBLEM

S U B M I T T E D T O : M A A M SHARON B Y: N AT TA N A I K . & PA S S O R N

WE AND US WITH NOUNS

Use we when the pronoun is a subject or a predicate pronoun. Use us when the pronoun is an object.

Example: 1. We humans dont always appreciate trees.

2. Trees can feed and shelter us humans.

UNCLEAR REFERENCE
Be sure that each personal pronoun refers clearly to only one person, place, or thing. Confusing: Sara and Anne want to become tree farmers. She works after school at an orchard. (Who works? Sara or Anne?)

Clear: Sara and Anne want to become tree farmers. Anne works after school at an orchard.

PRONOUNS IN COMPARISONS
Sometimes the final clause in the comparison is left incomplete.
Examples: 1. You are better at French than I (am). 2. Jack has as good grades as she (has).

CONSISTENCY
Another major problem with pronouns results from lack of consistency in agreement, number and person.

Example:
Sometimes a student gets so far behind that they simply can't catch up. (Incorrect) "Student" is singular; "they" is plural. You could change "they" to "he or she,"

Or it is usually better to make the noun plural "students and keep the pronoun "they."

WHO OR WHOM?
To determine when to use "who" or "whom," keep in mind that "who" is a subject, like "he" or "they." "Whom" is an object, like "him" or "them."

Examples:
1. Who/whom is on the phone? He is on the phone. = Who is on the phone? (Correct) 2. To who/whom should I give this check? You should give this check to him. = To whom should I give this check? (Correct)

2. The researchers was divided between Greg and her.

PHRASES THAT INTERFERE

1. Sara, who guided Lewis and Clark, never lost her way. (Her agrees with Sara, not with Lewis and Clark)
2. About 40 men started up the Missouri River on their voyage. (Their agrees with men, not with Missouri River)
