Noted critics have cited influences as diverse as the Spatialism of Lucio Fontana (the score is perforated), the Dadaist Etymology (Neologisms act as instructional guideposts for the performer), Alberto Burri (Combustion) as well as the indeterminate elements found in composers John Cage and Morton Feldman. Graphically, Cornelius Cardew and the referential metallic inferences point to Enrico Castellani and Arte Provera. Smith works in a conceptual compositional aesthetic that eschews the traditional music notation system and in turn, creates a new tablature for the performer. Critics have described his work as The next complexity juxtaposed against serial indeterminacy.
