Victoria McDonald Date: March 28, 2013 L#:00099149 School: Mathews Elementary Grade: First Cooperating Teacher: Lori Ashley Subject: Science Lesson: Inquiry Investigation Intended Curriculum SC Science Academic Standard: 1-1: The student will demonstrate an understanding of scientific inquiry, including the processes, skills and mathematical thinking necessary to conduct a simple scientific investigation. SC Science Academic Indicator: 1-1.3 Carry out simple scientific investigations when given clear directions. SC Visual Arts: 1: The student will demonstrate competence in the use of ideas, materials, techniques, and processes in the creation of works of visual art. SC Visual Arts Indicator: VA1-1.4: Use all art materials and tools in a safe and responsible manner. EEDA: 4.2: Demonstrate cooperative work habits in a group. 4.3: Demonstrate being a positive team member. Safe School Climate Act: SECTION 59-63-140. Local school districts to adopt policies prohibiting harassment; required components; model policies by State Board of Education; bullying prevention programs. (3) a description of appropriate student behavior; Learning Objectives (Goals): Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to complete simple science procedures when receiving logical directions. Students will demonstrate the safe and responsible way to handle materials and tools. Prerequisites (Prior Knowledge): Students have completed science lessons that required them to follow specific instructions. This will be the first times students have ever used the science lab, however. This lesson will introduce students to future lessons based on making mixtures. Science Ideas: Students will gather an understanding that when completing science experiments or labs one must closely follow instructions. Students will understand the importance of following the specific directions. Students should be able to

reflect on this lab experience and have an appreciation for lab materials and tools. Students should value the purpose of using certain materials in the lab. Implemented Curriculum Engage: Inform students that they will be scientist today. o You will all be creating something today using various materials. Allow students to touch, feel, and smell all of the separate ingredients first. (*Do not tell them what the materials are) o Flour o Salt o Water o Cooking oil o Cream of tarter Students should try to predict what each material is. Also, have students predict what will happen when all ingredients are mixed together. (Write in Science Notebook) o What are you making? o Are you familiar with any of these materials? o How does it feel/smell, etc.? Explore and Explain: Materials: Flour Salt Water (Hot) Cooking Oil Cream of tarter Wax Paper Paper Pencils Measuring Cups Food Coloring Tin pie pans SMART Board Cleaning Materials Have a small class discussion about what everyone comes up with for his or her predictions. (These should be written in their science notebook) Tell the class what each ingredient is Explain that when you make something using multiple ingredients you must measure and use the correct amount of each ingredient. o Introduce the measuring cups Before beginning the procedure, place students in groups of two. o These groups should be pre-determined.

Give each group a designated work area with materials needed o Measuring cups o Wax paper o Tin pie pan for mixing Rotating partners, one member from each group should come up to retrieve one ingredient at a time when their group is called upon for a particular ingredient. o The water is to be HOT; therefore this ingredient should be taken to each work area for them. Students should not be traveling across the room with hot water. Once all ingredients have been added together and students have began threading the mystery creation (play dough), go around with food coloring and allow them to choose the color they would like for their mystery to be. o While students are threading the mixture ask them what they believe they are making. Expected answers: Biscuits Pancakes Bread After all ingredients are mixed together, all work areas should be cleaned and all play dough divided and bagged to preserve its texture *leave the wax paper out on the tabletops o Each student should have a bagged sample of the play dough. Together as a class, we would discuss what they believe they made. o Determine if there were any correct predictions o Discuss the texture, smell, etc. Have students write in their science notebooks. o Students should write about the experiment and should include what they did. Their predictions of what the mixture is should also be included in the writing. Inform students what the mixture is!! Allow them time to experiment with it and explore. At the conclusion, all play dough should be re-bagged and put away. All tabletops should be cleaned and all materials returned.

Elaborate: At the conclusion of the lesson, students will have the opportunity to share some of their personal thoughts and wonderings about producing the mixture and using various tools and materials. I will allow students to continue to share what they believed they were making in the beginning. Questions I will asks students may include but are not limited too: Can you recall the materials used to make this substance? What are some other uses for any of these materials? Why did we use the measuring cups?

Achieved Curriculum Cross Curricular Connections: Students participating in this lesson will experience art as well. Students will be preparing play dough and will be able to use this art material as they please during center time. Student could also use the play dough to make letters and to form spelling words. This would allow English standards to incorporate the play dough. Assessments of the Objectives (Evaluate): A checklist will be used to record students that are following given instructions. The checklist will also record which students are using materials and tools in a responsible and safe manner. Student science notebooks will be taken up and reviewed. Students should have predictions and a brief write up of what took place during the science experiment. Accommodations: There is not a need for any special accommodations during this lesson. Students will be grouped together, allowing them to help one another through the experiment. Resources: - South Carolina Science State Standards- Grade 1
