Globus Coelestis
Jost Amman (1539-1591)
Celestial chart
Nuremberg, Germany, 1564
Handcolored wood engraving
WOP-39

This celestial chart is similar in many ways to the pioneering works of

Johannes Honter (also in this exhibition), but with the addition of a
spectacular decorative border that includes inset portraits of six influential
ancient philosophers: Ptolemy, Plato, Archimedes, Abu Ma'shar, Thales
(identified as Milesius), and Euclid. Each philosopher is shown observing the
stars while holding objects representative of his discipline. The border also
contains numerous scientific instruments including an armillary sphere,
sundials, quadrants, a cross staff, and a globe. The date and signature ("JA")
are cleverly hidden on a pillar sundial on the lower left portion of the border.
