Madison Teas 10-21-08 English Period 8 Chapter 1 Essay In chapter one of TTC, Boyle introduces a complex theme on the

notions of the collision of opposing forces. The two different forces are different races and ways of living. In the chapter there literally two opposing forces a Mexican immigrant and a civilian who is American that collide into one another. We can tell that these two people have different ways of living by the characterization Boyle uses through out the book. One reason you can tell that there is a collision between races is because Delaney is furious after hitting Cndido with his car starts jumping to conclusions about that man just because he was Hispanic. He refers to the Mexicans as, Thoughtless people, stupid people, people who wanted to turn the whole world into garbage dump, a little Tijuana But soon Delaney realizes just because he is Mexican does not mean that he is these things. He is a human being like he is it does not matter the color of his skin. He still however thinks of this man as an animal. The author is implying their tension between color skin here and it is going to be a great impact in the other chapters. In another chapter racism is very strong. Two young boys are very rude by leaving the message beaner spray painted at their campsite and they also destroy America and Cndido campsite. Delaney is not the only prejudice person in the story he is actually I think the least prejudice. He becomes more prejudice as the story goes on but these boys who vandalized the immigrants campsite show a collision of opposing forces. When Delaney goes to the dealership and shows the dealer owner the damage of his car the dealer thinks he hit a coyote or a deer. I believe the other is implying that Mexican immigrants in these peoples eyes are no more then wild animals. This is ironic though because in article by Mark Twain suggest wild animal are actually the higher then

Madison Teas 10-21-08 English Period 8 we are. They do what they have to do to survive and do not cause harm to others unless needed for survival, humans however are murders. They are murders because they kill because they are selfish and arrogant. Some humans kill because jealousy the only time they kill for survival is in self-defense. The author however is making this an insult towards the Mexican and he is implying that he just wild creature living in the forest that jumped cross a street like dumb deer in front of a car. Boyle also uses great characterization in the book by describing Delaney M. as a very liberal upper class gentleman. The way Delaney describes the man as an upper-class male is by saying he drives a foreign car with personalized plates, this is signifying him as a snob. The way he reacts when he hits Cndido also shows the reader that he is a worrier and really has no idea how to resolve this situation.
