To: Dr. Thomas From: A. Lewis-Goseer, GSU Practicum Student CC: Date: Re: Mrs. Johnson & Mrs. Paramore April 4, 2013 Media Program Self-Evaluation

In collaboration with mentors Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Paramore, I recently conducted an evaluation of the media center. The evaluation tool used was the GA DOE 2012 Library Media Program SelfEvaluation Rubric. The rubric consists of nineteen Target Indicators and five categories which consist of: Student Achievement and Instruction, Staffing, Facilities, Access and Resources, Administrative Support and Staff Development. Each category has three levels, consisting of Basic, Proficient, and Exemplary. Attached you will find the results of the self-evaluation and an action plan based on the results of the rubric. If you have any questions or if you would like to speak with me in detail concerning the results, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thanks for your time and your willingness to support me in this evaluation.

Results of the Self-Evaluation Rubric

Category 1 Student Achievement and Instruction Proficient The media specialist collaborates with teachers; she attends some departmental collaborative planning meeting. Information literacy skills are integrated into the curriculum as much as possible, the lessons are an extension of what is being taught in class and AASL standards are used for the 21st Century Student. Accommodations area made for students with disabilities and students are usually asked to complete a self-assessment and both the teacher and the media specialist assess student achievement using a rubric. Category 2 Staffing Proficient A full-time media specialist is available and does not share duties outside of the media center on a frequent basis. The school also has a full-time paraprofessional employed to assist in the media center. The scheduling is flexible and fix and the media center is available to students both before and after school. The media center exceeds the square footage and is large enough to accommodate small, large and individuals simultaneously. The school has the capability to meet the criteria for video streaming and the school has white boards throughout the building. Category 3 Facilities, Access, and Resources Proficient The school library has print and non print resources available and is network with all computers in classrooms for student access at all times. Destiny is networked to all computers in the media center, new acquisitions are made based on book review and weeding is an ongoing process; as new resources

are added old and outdated resources are weeded. Galileo is promoted and encouraged throughout the school year. Students are trained on how to use Galileo and the staff is trained on an as needed basis. Category 4- Administrative Support Proficient The school district as a part-time person serving a Media Director, she serves two day a week at a center location and three days a week at her base school as media specialist. She is good at communicating with all media specialists in the district and disseminates messages from GaDOE and Galileo. Support at the school and district level Basic The school principal provides support to the media program and takes time to meet with the media specialist. The district media policy is limited and has not been updated for years. Funds are allocated to the media center annually and it does not exceed what is allotted by the state with local funds. Category 5 - Staff Development Proficient The media specialist is very professional and is knowledgeable of professional development services and technology skills. She is eager to provide staff development to teacher, collaborate planning with teachers and instruction to students.

Action Plan
The media program at Monroe High school did well on the Library Program Self-Evaluation Rubric, but to be classified as exemplary the following actions must be implemented. Make sure your school media program fosters critical thinking skills so students are proactive in search for reliable information and resources. Make sure all teachers are willing to plan collaborative and include the media specialist when planning instruction. Make sure you continue to provide lessons that cater to the need of diverse learning styles and abilities. Student data is used to design instruction and activities to increase achievement. Assess students using a variety of tools such as: rubrics, self-assessment and student presentations. Your media center should provide flexible scheduling. Support the media program in your school and take time to interact with the media specialist, talk and know what goes on in the media center. Students should be able to access library resources outside of the school. Encourage your teachers to integrate library resources into the curriculum.
