Describe the lessons activities and content.

Description and Background Information

Students will learn about the notes on the Treble Clef staff, as well as the half note, and quarter note, through song, rhyme, and a worksheet that will be projected by the Lumens Lamp and completed by the students. Students will learn the Music Alphabet, the Line Note rap Every Good Boy Does Fine in a line for the E,G,B, D, and F line notes and the rhyme FACE is in the Space for the F, A, C, and E space notes. They will use the Identifying the Treble worksheet to learn how to identify and notate line notes and space notes.
What will students be able to do at the conclusion of this lesson?

Lesson Objectives

At the conclusion of the lesson, students will be able to recognize the treble clef, the staff notes of the treble clef, half note, and quarter note.
How will I vary these objectives for students who do not understand the material? How will I vary these objectives for students who have already mastered the concept? How will I vary these objectives for students who are presently learning English?

Varying Objectives for Individuals Needs

These objectives will be repeated in multiple ways including aural, visual, and kinesthetic for understanding and reinforcement for those who believed they have previously mastered the concept. For ESOL students, I will work with the ESOL teacher as well as use visuals projected by the Lumens Lamp, writing on the worksheet projected by the Lumens Lamp and having the students complete the worksheet to show the relationship with notes and their placement.
Why is it important for the students to learn this content?

Statement of Purpose

This content is important for the students to become life-long learners, spectators, consumers, and advocates of music.

Materials and Resources

What materials and supplies are needed to help your students achieve the stated objectives? What will the teacher need? What will the students need? What other resources are needed? Will you use resource speakers?

I will need the Lumens Lamp to project Identifying the Treble worksheet and a permanent marker. I will provide student with the worksheet, pencils, and something hard to write on, such as cardboard or a book, if a lap desk is not available to them. They will also need their voices and energy. No other resources or resource speakers will be used.
What will you do to motivate the students and get their attention? What is the hook that will serve as a focus for the lessons activities?

Anticipatory Set

To motivate the students and get their attention, I will keep them involved through singing, writing, and participation. I will include hip-hop into the lesson with the Line Note Rap Every Good Boy Does Fine in a line which will serve as the hook and focus for identifying the notes on the treble cl ef.

Part II: IMPLEMENTATION

How will I find out what students already know about this topic?

Pre-assessment

I will ask students What do you believe a line note is? This will introduce the identification and notation of the line notes.
What will I do to show students what is expected?

Teacher Modeling or Demonstration Guided Practice

I will be singing with the students, projecting Identifying the Treble worksheet using the Lumens Lamp, and illustrate notation on the worksheet.
What will we do together as they learn how to succeed at the new task?

I will be singing with the students as they sing the music alphabet and the line note rap as well as writing and notating certain parts of the worksheet for examples and to increase understanding.
What questions will you ask to determine if students understand so far? What techniques or strategies will be used to determine if students understand so far?

Checking for Understanding

I will ask students to repeat the names of line notes of the treble clef and the space notes of the treble clef. I will also ask what number line the note is on or what space the note is in to check for student understanding of note placement. I will listen to students as they answer the questions and repeat the note names and provide immediate feedback. I will also observe students as they each complete parts of the worksheet on their own or in pairs to check for understanding.
What will students do by themselves to show that they have internalized the knowledge?

Independent Practice Closure

Students will complete notating line notes and space notes on their worksheet.
How will I conclude the lesson and relate it to future experiences? How will you wrap up the lesson to reinforce concepts taught during the lesson?

I will conclude by asking the students to keep their worksheets and return with them every week for class. I will also tell them that the information from this lesson will help them compose their own song.

Students can sing the song, rap, and rhyme at home and participate in class. I would encourage students and parents to practice using these different songs to read sheet music of various songs. I would try and involve music colleagues asking them to show students how reading music creates the music they listen to today.

I will use the Lumens Lamp to project Identifying the Treble Worksheet.
How will you connect this lesson with other content areas across the curriculum?

I will connect math by counting the lines and spaces where the notes are located on the treble clef and when addressing the value of a half note and a quarter note. I will connect ELA by singing the music alphabet and by writing the note names and the mnemonic devices for the line and space notes.

PART III: REFLECTION

Describe the strengths of your instructional techniques, strategies and classroom management. Describe the strengths of student engagement.

Strengths

The strength of the instructional technique as whole group instruction is I am able to watch more than one student at a time and keep their attention. In strategies, I used different genres of music, and observation. In classroom management, I did not leave much room for discipline issues. When there was an issue I addressed it immediately. Students were very strong in being engaged in the lesson as the lesson was students centered and asked students to be involved.
Describe the weaknesses of your instructional techniques, strategies and classroom management. Describe the weaknesses of student engagement.

Weaknesses

The weaknesses in whole group instruction are the inabilities to focus on one student at a time. In strategies, I can continue to add for variety, and in classroom management, I can work on not having to address any issues. There is still improvement needed in student engagement as I do not have 100% of students involved.

Suggestions for Improvement

What would you change when teaching this lesson again?

I would add playing a Treble Clef game where notes on the treble clef spelled out words. Students would be divided into two to four teams that would try and identify the word(s) being spelled by the notes on the treble clef. Revised 1-2012
