April 2, 2013 Dear State of Tennessee, I write to enthusiastically express my interest in the Director of School Improvement (District Support/CORE) position for the state of Tennessee. This semester I am completing my Master of Science in Student Affairs in Higher Education with a concentration in student affairs leadership and organization development. After reading the posting on the State of Tennessee website, I believe my professional experiences and academic achievements, coupled with my motivation and passion as an educator, make me an ideal candidate for this position. At Miami University, I have applied my philosophy to create socially just and socially diverse environments through my graduate internship in the Office of Diversity Affairs as the creator of the first Multicultural Student Leadership Conference. The involvement of multicultural first-year students, upper-class student leaders, and surrounding area high school students not only celebrated diverse organizations on campus, but the event also created a supportive space where multicultural students can take steps towards intellectual growth and leadership development. I also serve as the Miami University Gospel Singers and Black Presidents Caucus advisor, as well as instruct the EDL 100 Career Development and the College Student course. Additionally, as graduate resident director, I have gained an expertise in training and supervising upper-class leaders. My supervising style embodies all goal setting, appreciative feedback, rolemodeling, and cultural sensitivity in order to assure that students are challenged and supported in their leadership development. My experience with supervising and participating in programming has also allowed me to establish collaborative partnerships between Academic Affairs, Student Affairs and student residence within the Office of Residence Life. These partnerships aided in the effective implementation and development of activities and seminars that related to academic achievement, campus diversity, and student excellence. With the array of professional experiences stated in this letter and in my attached resume, I have attained talents and competences regarding coordinating events, delegating tasks to student leaders and university staff, and collaboration and the ability to work in a team setting. As a graduate of Sheffield High School in Memphis, TN, I feel that I also have knowledge of the educational system for the state of Tennessee. I am excited about the career opportunity with the State of Tennessee. I hope this letter provides you with a glimpse into some of the experiences I have had and my personal and professional value. I look forward to speaking about my qualifications in an interview. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Jeremy Carter
