Students should know the difference between data and information. The ability to design and create a database; perform queries involving more than one tables; perform calculated queries; use indexes to perform searches; create reports using summary features. Be familiar with the different types of reports generated by a variety of professions.

TEACHING AND LEARNING STRATEGIES Lesson 1: Introductory Lesson (2 x 35 minutes) What is the purpose of storing data? Reflection: Ask students to reflect on the process that they went through when they came into the school for registration in Form 1 identifying the data that was collected about them, and the reasons for storing the school capturing, storing and updating this data on a yearly basis. Collaboration: Group work Identify and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of manual and computerized databases using the following scenarios: Receiving an End of Term Report Book when they started school as opposed to getting computerized Reports now. Examine the process of getting a recommendation from school. Evaluate the system used by the library to borrow books now compared to the past.

Students should be able to: explain the concept of a database Use terminology commonly associated with a database Distinguish among terminology associated with files and databases Outline the advantages and limitations of databases Extension: Research Project: Use the jigsaw method for students to evaluate and report findings on the systems used to keep records in public institutions e.g. Hospitals, Police Stations, ODPM, Licensing Authority, Board of Inland Revenue; National Insurance Board. Lesson 2: (2 x 35 minutes) What are the different ways that data can be captured? Why is it important to uniquely identify individuals? Ask students to reflect on at least three ways that a citizen can be uniquely identified. (National ID, Drivers Permit, Passport) Ask students to reflect on one way that she is uniquely identified in school. (Student ID) Ask students to reflect on two ways that they have been uniquely identified already. (SEA Reg. No. and NCSE Reg. No.) Students should be able to: Create a database Modify a table structure Sort a database Lesson 3: (4 x 35 minutes) How can information be retrieved efficiently? Ask students to think about what structures exist in school to help administration efficiently manage them. (They are organized into different classes at the different form levels; they have different colours for the House System; they belong to different clubs/societies etc) Students should be able to: Establish relationships Query a database using multiple search conditions Determine the results of a search on a database given multiple conditions Lesson 4: (2 x 35 minutes) Why do we produce reports? Ask students to reflect on the reasons for getting Midterm and End of Term Reports Cooperative learning ask students to describe the different types of reports that may be generated by various organizations. Students should be able to: Generate reports to the screen, printer and files

Lesson 5: Summative Lesson (2 x 35 minutes) Assessment testing students ability to create a database; perform queries involving more than one tables; perform calculated queries; use indexes to perform searches; create reports using summary features.
