GrantProposal SoundBodySoundMindisanorganizationwhosemissionistopromoteselfconfidenceand healthylifestylechoicesamongournationsyouth(soundbodysoundmind.org,2013).SoundBody SoundMindbelievesthateverystudentshouldhaveasolidfoundationoffitnessresources,knowledge andanopportunitytoliveahealthyandactivelifestyle.Inordertofulfilltheirmissionstatement,Sound BodySoundMindsdonates$40,000toschoolsacrossAmericatopromoteandeducatechildrenin physicalfitness.Themoneydonatedtoeachschoolisusedtocreateastateoftheartfitnessroomfilled withellipticalmachines,stationarybicycles,rowmachines,sandhandweights,jumpropes,agility ladders,andexercisemats.Alongwithequipment,SoundBodySoundMindtrainseachphysical educationteacherandgiveseachschoolacopyoftheirfitnesscurriculumandexercises. ThegrantfortheSoundBodySoundMindfitnessroom,training,andcurriculumconsistsof morethanjustthesubmissionoftheapplication.Afteransweringandpresentingthesixrequired questions,thefirstphaseofthegrantprocess,theSoundBodySoundMindsgrantcommitteewill contacttheschooliftheapplicationhasbeenacceptedandscheduleaninterviewwiththegrantwriter, theprincipaloftheschool,andoneortwophysicaleducationteachersfromthedepartment.Inthe interview,thecommitteewantstodiscussthechallengesfacedbythephysicaleducationdepartmentat theschoolandhowthedepartmentplanstoimplementtheSoundBodySoundMindcurriculumintothe existingphysicaleducationprogram.Ifallgoeswellintheinterviewprocess,thecommitteemembers

visittheschoolandphysicaleducationclassestoseewhetherornotthedepartmentissupportingthe samegoalsthatSoundBodySoundMindorganizationseeks.Inaddition,themembersofSoundBody SoundMindwanttoobservehowclassesarerunandviewtheroomthatwillbecomethenewfitness center.Toconcludetheprocessofapplyingforthefitnessroomgrant,thecommitteememberswill contactthedepartmenttonotifywhetherornottheschoolhasbeenawardedthe$40,000.Ifthe schooldidnotreceivethegrant,theyareinvitedtoreapplythefollowingyear (soundbodysoundmind.org,2013). Physicaleducationisoverlookedinthemajorityofschoolseveryday.Thesubjectisnot consideredacoresubjectbutistheonlysubjectthathasarequiredamountofminuteslistedin educationcode.Sinceadministratorstypicallydonotseethevalueofphysicaleducationintheirschool, littlebudgetissetasidetoensurethatphysicaleducationreceiveswhatclassesneedtosuccessfully teachcontentstandards.Forthatreason,beingproactiveandfindingmoneybecomesthejobofthe teachers.Ifteacherswantnewequipment,theyneedtofindtheresources.Onepossiblesolutiontoget gymequipmentistoraisedonations,butduetocosts,schoolstendtoinvestinusedorpoorly conditionedequipmentabetteroptionistowriteforagrant. TheSoundBodySoundMindgrantwouldallowourdepartmenttoupgradethephysical educationspecifictechnologyofferedtostudentstoincreasestudentlearning.TheCaliforniaPhysical EducationContentStandardsrequiresstudentsingradessix,sevenandeighttodevelopan individualizedfitnessprogram.Teachingfitnesscontentcanbedonewithoutfitnessequipment.Access togymequipmentmakesteachingtheseconceptsrealandvisiblebecausestudentsdonothaveto estimatehowmuchtimetheyhaveusedapieceofequipmenttheellipticalwillkeeptrackforthem

(http://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/documents/pestandards.pdf,2005).Studentswouldnothaveto estimatehowmuchweighttheyareliftingbecausethesandbagstatestheweightontheoutsideofthe bag.Recordingthenumberofrepetitionscompletedatacertainweight,ortimespentonamachineinto afitnesslogwillhelpstudentsinstantlyseehowtoimprovetheirfitnesslevel,therebyhelpingtoaddress thecontentstandardstheyshouldbelearninginmiddleschool.HavingtheSoundBodySoundMind fitnessroomwilladdtotheachievementofhavingphysicallyeducatedpeople,theultimategoalof physicaleducation(http://www.aahperd.org/naspe/standards/nationalstandards/pestandards.cfm,2004). Ifgrantedthenewstateoftheartfitnessroom,ourdepartmentwillbetransformed.Wewill havetheopportunitytoprovidephysicalactivitytostudentsandstaffatanytimeoftheday.The departmentcouldvolunteertheirtimeduringlunch,beforeschoolandafterschoolafewdaysaweekto allowstudentsandstafftousethefitnessroomataconvenienttime.Wecouldalsoinvolvetheafter schoolprogramtoallowthestudentswhoparticipateinBeyondtheBellandAllStarstousethefitness room.Inaddition,thefitnessroomwouldbecomepartofourweeklyfitnessprogramwithclassesfilling theroomeveryTuesdayandFriday,providinganewmeansofachievingphysicalfitnessbesidesthe biweeklyrunning.Ourcurriculumwillalsobenefitfromthefitnessroombecausefitnessconceptswillbe taughtwithactualgymlikefitnessequipmentmakingthecurriculumcometolife. AccordingtotheCaliforniaStatePhysicalEducationContentStandards,thefitness componentstandsfortwooutofthefiveoverarchingstandards.Thephysicaleducationdepartmenthas notincludedmuchofafitnesscurriculumbecausewehavenothadtheproperequipmentormotivation toteachfitnesscontent.Someteacherstypicallyspendadayortwoeachsemesterglossingoverthe fivecomponentsoffitness,butnoneofthestaffmembersgointogreatdetailtofulfillanyofthefitness

contentstandards.Havingaroomdevotedtoteachingfitnessandmakingthechangesothatevery teacherhasaunitinthenewfitnessroomwillensuremoreteacherswillcoverthemanystandardsthey previouslywerenotteaching. Overall,theSoundBodySoundMindgrantcouldreformthephysicaleducationdepartmentin waysthedepartmentneverthoughtpossible.Theonechangethedepartmentisnotpreparedforthe camaraderieandteamworkthetransformationcouldcreatebetweendepartmentmembers.New equipmentcouldofferaplatformforcollaborationoffreshlessonsandideasofteachingfitnesscontent aswellasthemotivationfortheteacherssetintheirwaytofeelrefreshedfortherestoftheircareers. Receivingthegrantwouldguaranteechangewillhappentothedepartment.Thesechangesareworth thepossiblechallengesandcertainpositivereformationswecouldfaceifwereceivetheSoundBody SoundMindgrantworth$40,000infitnessequipmentandcurriculum.

Asuccessfulphysicaleducationprogramisonethathasafocusandcurriculumthatgoesbeyond engagingastudentsbodyandcaptivatestheirmindsaswell.Aprogramofhighstandardshasa curriculumthatisbasedontheCaliforniaContentStandards,whichhasbeenimplementedusingfunand informativelessonsandassessmentstoguideinstructionforeachstudentandtodetermineeach studentsneeds.Additionally,throughtheseassessmentsstudentsareheldaccountableforhisorher ownlearning.Aneffectiveprogramisalsoheldaccountablebyadministrationwhobothevaluateand supporttheirstaff.Overallanoutstandingprogramhasabalancedfocusonthefitness,motorlearning, andpsychosocialaspectsofphysicaleducation.Ourcurrentphysicaleducationprogramstrivestomeet thesegoalseveryday.Wehaverecentlyundergonemajorchangesinthelastyear.Wewerehithard withreductioninforceandreceiveddisplacedteachersfromotherschoolsandteacherswantingto transfertoanewschool.However,thesolidprogramwehaveestablishedhasnotchangedwiththe newstaff. OurcurriculumisstronglybasedontheCaliforniaContentstandards,teachingmostlyskillsbased lessonsinthesixthgrade,individualsportskillsinthe7thgrade,andteamsportsstrategiesinthe8th grade.Wetrytousephysicaleducationtechnologyasmuchaspossibleinourclasses.Forexample, wepossessthreesetsofpedometers.EachteacherhasaniPadandisencouragedtousetheiPadto increasestudentlearning.Skillsvideos,music,andgradingprogramsareconstantlyincorporatedinto physicaleducationclasses. 2.PleasedescribetheroomwheretheSoundBodySoundMindFitnessCenterwouldbe

located.Includesquarefootage,locationoncampus,typeofflooring,accessibilitytograssor blacktopareasandanyothercharacteristicsyoudeemnecessary. Theroomwewoulduseforthenewfitnessroomisaclassroomthatusedtobededicatedtotheshop class.Sincetheschoolgotridoftheshopclass,theroomhasbeendesignatedtothephysical educationdepartmenttouseasaclassroomandteachingspace.Teachershavetaughtlessonsranging fromfitnesstobowlingtojugglingtodanceinroom47.Nearthephysicaleducationarea,room47is acrosstheserviceroadanddirectlynexttoonlyoneotherclassroom.Withamplespace,400square feet,aclassof50studentsfitseasily.Thebackoftheclassroomhasdoubledoors,whichopenuptoa largeasphaltarea.TheflooringintheRoom47istileandhastwoclosets,whichprovidestoragearea forequipmentwhennotinuse.Additionally,thereisanupstairsarea,whichprovidesevenmore storageforequipment. 3.PleasedescribeyourschoolsplanforincorporatingthefitnesscenterintoyourP.E. program.Forexample,howmanyhoursaweekwillthefitnesscenterbeused? Thefitnessroomwouldbeusedfivehoursadayandalmosteverydayoftheschoolyear.Wehave seventeachingareasandseventeachers.Oneoftheareasweuseforinstructionisroom47.Health andfitnesswouldbetaughtinroom47asoneofourthreetofiveweekunitsofinstruction.Inaddition, ourdepartmenthas2cardiodaysaweek.Insteadofrunningtwiceaweek,theplanistorotatetheuse ofthenewfitnessroombetweentheseventeacherssothatthecardiodayshavemorevarietyandkeep studentsinterestedinphysicalfitness. 4.PleaselistyourP.E.staffsparticipationinprofessionaldevelopmentthisyear.Whatare yourplansforprofessionaldevelopmentnextyear?

Ourdepartmentparticipatesinprofessionaldevelopment,whichisdevelopedbyouradministration,on siteonceamonth.OffsiteprofessionaldevelopmenthasincludedgoingtotheCaliforniaState Conference,CAHPERD,aswellastheNationalConference,AAHPERD.Someteachershave attendedGearUp,aprofessionaldevelopmentthatfocusesonourschoolgettingmorestudents interestedinattendingcollege.WehavetwoteacherswhowerepartoftheCaliforniaSubjectMatter Project(CSMP)ProjectNorthReachforseveralyears.Afterashortbreakofgettingamasters degree,oneofthoseteacherswillbereturningtotheCSMP.OneteacherparticipatedintheNational BoardCertificationprogramandreceivedherNBCcertification.Wehaveteacherswhohave participatedinLAUSDsphysicaleducationleadershipprofessionaldevelopmentatThacherSchoolin Ojai,CA.AllofourphysicaleducationteachershavebeentrainedintheCaliforniaPhysicalEducation ContentStandardsrangingfromlevel2tolevel4. Asadepartment,wewillcontinuetoattendprofessionaldevelopmentastheopportunitiesarise. CAHPERDisonthelisteveryyear,aswetrytosendtwoorthreeteacherseachyear.Nextyearwill alsoconsistofattendingtheremainderoftheLAUSDsphysicaleducationleadershipprogram.Aswe learnaboutnewprospectsofprofessionaldevelopment,weevaluatetheneedsofthedepartmentand decidewhowillattend. 5.PleasedescribeyouradministrationscommitmenttoPhysicalEducation.Forexample,has theadministrationshowntheP.E.staffand/orstudentsP.E.isanimportantsubjectby reducingclasssizes,encouragingphysicalactivityorprovidingextraresources? forphysicaleducationimportantandcontinuetokeepourclasssizeslowevenafterthegrantwas finished.Althoughthereisnomoneyinthebudgetforphysicaleducation,whenstaffmembersinthe physicaleducationdepartmentaskforapieceofequipment,theadministratorswillusuallyfindmoney andsupportthedecisiontomakethepurchase.Thesechoiceshaveallowedthedepartmenttogrowa significantamountofsportsequipmentforstudentstouse,keepingthestudenttoequipmentratiolow. 6.Doesyourschoolhaveanafterschoolpartner?Wouldtheafterschoolpartnerbewillingto includetheSoundBodySoundMindFitnessCenterinitsprogramming?
