SIOP Lesson Plan Template 2

STANDARDS:
3.4: Physical Science, CHemistry, and Physics A. Recognise basic concepts about the structure and properties of matter Describe properites of matter Know that combining two or more substances can make new materials with different properties Know different material characteristics

THEME: Science LESSON TOPIC: Rocks OBJECTIVES: Language:

Produce original sentences Make predictions or hypothesis

Content:
The student will be able to distinguish the three types of rocks The student will be able to create the three types of rocks with candy manipulatives

LEARNING STRATEGIES: Hands on centers, assessment game to synthesis information

learned, creation of word wall to build prior knowledge knowledge

KEY VOCABULARY: Metamorphic, igneous, sedimentary MATERIALS: Rocks, magnifying glasses, candy (starbursts, melted chocolate, cookie dough,
sprinkles), ziplock bags, spoons, foil, smartboard interactive worksheet

MOTIVATION:
(Building background) Jack will be asked to name words that come to mind when he hears the word 'rock'. Teacher will write all of the words on the board to create a word wall. Teacher will give leading questions such as, "Were do you think rocks come from?", "Do you think that there are different kinds of rocks?", "Where do you see rocks?", etc. Teacher will show Jack a picture/book about volcanoes and ask him if he knows that it is. If Jack does know, write the word 'volcano' on the board, if he does not, scaffold his understanding. Show short video displaying volcanoes and their relationship with the insides of the earth. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Be7o6BYVOzA). Compare inside of earth (very hot) with an oven. Teachers wil engage Jack in a brief discussion about what he saw in the video, then Jack will write a sentence about how volcanoes are connected.

PRESENTATION:
(Language and content objectives, comprehensible input, strategies, interaction, feedback) After building background, the teacher will explain that there are three main types of rock (metamorphic, igneous, and sedimentary). Teacher will write the three types of rocks on the board and explain the definitions of each rock. Teacher will the video to explain the three types of rocks. Vocabulary: Metamorphic-when rock from inside the earth is heated and squeezed Igneous-when rock from inside the earth cools and hardens

Sedimentary-formed when bits of sand and stone, called sediment, are cemented together.

PRACTICE AND APPLICATION: (Meaningful activities, interaction, strategies, practice and application, feedback)
The student will be engaged in an inquiry type of experience. There will be three stations (one for each type of rock) at which the student will first observe a real rock of the type of one at the station. The student will then write down any observations on the smartboard interactive worksheet. Then, the student will create the type of rock at the station using candy manipulatives. The goal is to use the vocabulary words correctly. "Ok, now we have created three stations for you to explore the three types of rocks. First you will look at the rock through the magnifying glass and write down what you observe about the rock on the smartboard worksheet. Then, you will create an edible form of the rock using candy! You will do this for all three stations. One of us will be there to guide you for each station. Do you have any questions before you begin?" STATION 1: METAMORPHIC "At station one, we will look at metamorphic rock. Do you remember how the metamorphic rock is formed? Yes, it is when rock from the inside of the earth is heated and squeezed. From looking at the rock through the lens, what do you observe about the rock? Let's write that on the worksheet to record our information. To represent this type of rock, we are going to use two starbursts and a ziplock bag. Just like a metamorphic rock, the starburts will be squeezed together to create an edible one! Unwrap the two starbursts and put them in the bag. Then, squeeze them together and see what happens. What do you see? This is similar to what happens when a metamorphic rock is formed. Let's write this down on our worksheet. Then, you can move on to the next rock station." STATION 2: IGNEOUS "For the second station, we will look at igneous rocks. Do you remember how igneous rock is formed? Yes, it is when rock from inside the earth cools and hardens. From looking through the lens, what do you observe about the rock? Let's write that on the worksheet to record our information. To represent this type of rock, we are going to use chocolate. In this bowl, we have melted chocolate. This is similar to the hot magma that is deep in the earth. When the magma comes out of the volcano, it dries and hardens, which forms a rock. Let's take out a scoop of this melted chocolate and watch it dry and harden. What do you see? Let's record this on our worksheet. Then you can move to the next rock station." STATION 3: SEDIMENTARY "At the third station, we will look at sedimentary rocks. Do you remember how sedimentary rocks are formed? Yes, they are formed when bits of sand and stone, called sediment, are cemented together. From looking through the lens, what do you see? Want to write it on our worksheet? It is important to record observations, right? Especially when learning science! Ok, so to represent this type of rock, we are going to use this sugar cookie dough, which represents sand. Let's spread this on some wax paper. Ok, now we are going to sprinkle some chocolate chips and sprinkles on the cookie dough. What do you think these represent? Yes, they represent the fossils and stone that are in sedimentary rocks. If we had more time, we would baek your cookie and this would represent when the rock is cememted together. But, for now we can just pretend. Let's record some information on the worksheet and get ready to review what we learned."

REVIEW AND ASSESSMENT: (Review objectives and vocabulary, assess learning)
To review, the teacher would go over the worksheet with the student. As an assessment, the teacher will play the "What am I?" game with Jack using a powerpoint with descriptions of the three rocks as well as holding the type of rock. This assessment will assess Jack's understanding of the three types of rocks and how they are formed.

EXTENSION:
As an extension, the teacher would have rocks in a basket. The student would use their magnifying glass to examine the rocks and place them in three categories by the type of rock. They would be asked to orally describe the types of rocks and common characteristics of them.
