II. Before you start Identify prerequisite knowledge and skills. Students will have read the first 2 Chapters of The Giver, and have some sort of understanding on what personal identity means.
Pre-assessment (for learning): Have the students journal on what they think makes up identity, drawing a symbol of one thing that stands for identity.

Formative (for learning): The students will share their combined ideas with the class and I will be able to make a formative assessment based off of these ideas on what they know and where we can go from there. Formative (as learning): Have the students compare with a partner and combine their ideas to make one complete definition of identity. Relating this to The Giver will help them see where their understanding of the book is. Summative (of learning): The students will fill in the graphic organizer of things that make up personal
