Guidelines on the Video Journal

1. Intro:
State the aim/purpose (question) Describe the set-up (germination, #of seeds, mass measurements, filters, chambers, identify biotic & abiotic factors) 2. Log & Analysis Summary of observations (daily/weekly/highlights) Connection of observations to 4 Laws of Ecology Data table & graph (connections) Total time: 5 7 minutes

Word Bank:
4 Laws of Ecology Habitat Autotrophs/heterotrophs Decomposers/detritivores Carrying capacity Transpiration Biotic Abiotic Closed system Photosynthesis Respiration Water/carbon cycle

DAY 1: Video Journal

A. Combine data for group, edit content B. Decide on time allocation (5-7 min video) C. Start video (select pictures/clips, record audio)
DUE TODAY: Individual Journal 15 pts (Science Inquiry) + 5 pts (Personal Management)

Chamber
Observations
Explanation 1st Law 2nd Law 3rd law TERRESTRIAL

Some Talking Points

plant growth-height, dead/alive, skinny, dry/wet soil , foggy, masses
photosynthesis, carrying capacity, water/carbon cycle, transpiration How is water cycled; Where do plants get their mass? Does water stay in the chamber? Without other inputs, how is the chamber sustained to support life?

4th Law
Observations Explanation 1st Law 2nd Law 3rd law

why plants eventually die/degenerate; or why plants are thriving?

temperature, dry/damp, foggy, fungi, fruit peeling/plastic/paper habitat, biotic, respiration, decomposers, carbon cycle, nutrients How is the chamber maintained to support life? Why did plants grow in this chamber? Why is chamber damp? What happens when man-made products (e.g. plastic) are added? Why is this chamber so important to the whole system? pH, appearance, water temp, fish/snails, aquatic plant, masses autotrophs, abiotic, photosynthesis, closed system, H2O volume Where does O2 needed by fish come from? Where did the critters come from? Where do fish get their food?

DECOMPOSITION

4th Law Observations Explanation 1st Law 2nd Law

3rd law AQUATIC

4th Law

How does nature sustain life in this chamber?

What happens when fish/snail dies? Why does pH change?

DAY 2: Group Video

A. Organize/Edit video (40 min) 10:20-11:00 B. Peer Review (Collaboration) (10 min) 11:00-11:10 C. Edit/Submit work (15 min) 11:10-11:25
