WiMAX Performance : “beyond the hype...”

„ Newspapers presented WiMAX as a “70 Mbit/s – 70 miles

technology”: this is a “hype”, just an advertising message

„ Performance in real conditions are a little less impressive and a

“trade-off” between distance and capacity is normally obtained

„ A fundamental parameter is represented by the “visibility”

conditions between BS and terminals
LOS (Line Of Sight) conditions offer top performance for business class
wireless access
In NLOS (Non Line of Sight) conditions, performance are reduced, but

sufficient to guarantee a high quality residential wireless access

WiMAX Now and Tomorrow (Siemens View)

„ Today WiMAX systems are optimized for Wireless DSL with

high peak capacity and spettral efficiency

Supporting voice (VoIP) but optimized for data

A raisonable RF band is necessary (at least 14 MHz, better 28 MHz
In-field test results already confortable for mass deployment

„ A future evolution to mobile terminals (Notebooks, PDAs), to

improve capacity and reduce TS power consumption, requires:

Lower RF frequencies (2.5 GHz, eventually 700-800 MHz)

 Innovative antenna technologies (MIMO, AAS)

© Siemens S.p.A, October 2005

Future-proof standard/technology in severe mobile environments

Coverage in Rural Environment

In this application, few BSs can feed many fixed terminals (typically
outdoor) for broadband service to residential customers in rural areas
not achievable by optical fiber or DSL.

BSs are connected to the provider network through Point-to-Point radio

with Ethernet interface.

Conclusions

„ WiMAX is ready for

Playing immediatly the role of Wireless DSL, overcoming the

digital divide where ADSL is not available

Playing the role of public “Wi-Fi” with a large coverage of the

territory, in short term

Playing the role of IP backhauling for pico BTS/NodeB, in

short term as well

Being the basic technology for 4G (evolution to “triple play”
