Science at work

Students conduct and report collaboratively on experiments related to their questions about living and non-living things and events. They recognise human influences in the environment, which affect the survival of living things Participate in activities to protect and care for the natural and built environment. Describe some of the roles and purposes of groups in the community They work with other students to identify a local issue and plan possible actions to achieve a desired outcome.

Teaching, learning and assessment activities This unit focuses on use of scientific investigation to provide valid information in order to persuade an intended audience. The required prior learning is: Students have explored the attributes of the Great Barrier Reef such as heritage listings, location, living species, environment, culture and community. Students can identity their communities and important events They can identify their environment on a local and global scale Through previous humanity units students have been introduced to concepts of time and history and Australia Exposure to various text types including the structure and language features of a persuasive text Students have composed a persuasive text prior to this unit.

Activity 1: Pollution on the Great Barrier Reef In this activity, the emphasis is on establishing students conceptual understanding of their environment and the effects pol lution can have on a global and local scale. This activity should be inquiry based and allow students to make their own conclusion in regards to the effect of pollution on the Great Barrier Reef. The activity will require students to find the effects of pollution and how this may influence the Great Barrier Reef through the use of experiments. Activities Students will be seated, and asked to brain storm what they think pollution is? Supporting the activities To support and guide discussion the teacher will use probing question such as Where do you see pollution, Does it affect our lives. Students will be encouraged to record ideas and thoughts on IWB to keep the activity Assessment Assessment for learning: Teacher makes choices about probing questions based on observation of student engagement Assessment as learning:

Teacher will encourage students to link ideas with prior knowledge of great barrier reef using topic specific vocabulary.
