ABSTRACT

The health care industry has long recognized that musculoskeletal

disorders is a major concern with respect to patient handling. Nurses handle
patients more frequently than other health workers in hospital. These disorders are
associated with incorrect manual patient handling, applying excessive forces
during pushing or pulling and use of awkward postures during patient handling.
Nurses in hospital never have a training in patient handling.
Aim of this research too reduce the musculoskeletal symptoms in the
nurses, by giving a training in patient handling.
This research used quasi experiment design. The participant is 32 nurses
who attended a one time training in patient handling. Musculoskeletal symptoms
were collected using Standardized Nordic Questionnaire (SNQ), before and after
three months of training. The Chi Square test was used to analyze the difference in
prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms before and after training.
Training in patient handling had significantly reduced musculoskeletal
symptoms, a) by means of the SNQ, the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms
in neck, shoulders, hands, upper back and knees was significantly different before
and after training; b) the prevalence of sick leave because of musculoskeletal
symptoms in neck, shoulders, hands, upper back, knees and feet was significantly
higher before than after training; c) among 7-day musculoskeletal symptoms
before training had significantly higher prevalence in shoulders, hands, upper
back and knees than after training.
Patient handling training could be applied to increase the knowledge and
skill of nurses in the beginning of their work as an induction training and also
continual training to maintain their skill in patient handling.
