Childhood o Born in Brooklyn, NY In 1969 o Sexually abused by her father and grandfather o Ran away from home at 6, but returned the same day o Raped by her father at age 9 o

-admitted it to her mother 5 years later -sent to many foster homes after her father was registered as a sex offender

Personality o Disruptive and often got into fights o Teacher recommended psychiatric help

Murder
o June 14, 1983; Met for the first time at the Auburn Greene condominium complex swimming pool o Knew each other for only 8 hours before deciding to go on another runaway adventure o Knocked on door of houses with car they liked o Most sent them away; few invited them in o Saw 1970 Dodge and knocked on the door o 85-year-old Anna Brackett opened up and invited them in

o Anna Brackett was very generous and unsuspecting o She chatted with the girls for nearly an hour o Cindy asked for a glass of water and Brackett told her to help herself in the kitchen o Cindy throws knife to Shirley who stabs her 27 times and kills her o Meanwhile Shirley searched for car keys and money o Girls realize keys do not match the car and run out to Highway 49 and try to hitchhike a ride o Carl Brackett drives by them on the highway and does not suspect a thing; thinks they are stupid or brave for hitchhiking

CAUGHT
o The girls were identified by a few neighbors in the condo complex o Investigators went to Cindys home o Shirley confessed quickly and afterwards Cindy did too o Confiscated Shirleys diary where she wrote Today, Cindy and I ran away and killed an old lady. It was lots of fun!! o Girls felt no remorse

Trial and Arrest

o Tried as juveniles under state law o Shirleys attorney entered a plea of guilty by reason of insanity o On July 29, 1983 both girls were found guilty of first degree murder o Given maximum time allowed which was incarceration until age 27 in a California Youth Authority facility- 12 years for Cindy and 11 for Shirley (at time of sentencing)

o Cindy Collier was released in 1992, after serving 9 years

- obtained a junior college degree and went on to law - mother of four and living in California school

After It All

o After Shirleys arrest, her family 3 conversations with her before completely cutting her off
- in 1992, she was able to track down Louis Wolf (father) and found out her mother had abandoned the family - after a while, Louis again ended contact with Shirley - released in June 1995; struggled with alcohol and drug addiction and was arrested many times after for crimes ranging from assault to prostitution; her whereabouts are unknown
