COOP/WONCA Chart as a Screen for Mental Disorders in Primary Care

Many people with mental disorders receive treatment in primary health care facilities less than 50% of mental disorder cases. There is better chance of achieving good mental health outcome when these teams work within collaborative care models. Questionnaires can be used to facilitate screening for mental disorders. Example of such questionnaires include the 20 Self Reporting Questionnaire, WHO-5 which was originally developed to asses wellbeing in patients with chronic conditions, and COOP/WONCA Charts which could also identify patients who are mentally ill. Family psychian and primary care nurse are trained in mental health in academic seminars during a period of 1 year with goals of integrating mental health in a patient-centered/biopsychosocial approach. Each questionnaires have different items and method of interview also the results of interview from each questionnaire have different indicator. To find out the feasibility assessment of using each questionnaire, the community health workers and nurse assistants completed a questionnaires about feasibility of their use, it had 9 item focused and 4 response options. The participants are patients, community health workers and nurse assistants. The data were collected by community health workers and nurse assistants who administered the SRQ-20, WHO-5 and COOP/WONCA to the patients and the result is almost all community health workers and nurse assistants rated the SRQ-20. WHO-5 and COOP/WONCA Charts as satisfactory but the COOP/WONCA Charts are the most recommended for routine use because it is a useful instrument to screen for mental disorder with good psychometric qualities.
