Limited (3) The topic sentence does not present a why argument. The topic sentence is specific (mostly covers who, what, where, when, and how) about the contents of the paragraph. Limited contextual explanation of the document/concept of the paragraph is included.

Acceptable (4) The topic sentence presents a why argument. The topic sentence is specific (mostly covers who, what, where, when, and how) about the contents of the paragraph. Some contextual explanation of the document/concept of the paragraph is included.

Exemplary (5) The topic sentence presents a why argument. The topic sentence is specific (covers who, what, where, when, and how) about the contents of the paragraph. A brief but complete contextual explanation of the document/concept of the paragraph is included. Direct language from the document is used. Direct language is not used for plot summary. Direct language is not followed by a simple explanation or redundant statement. The evidence is analyzed in depth or is challenged.
