Figurative Language

Personification
Writing which gives non human objects human qualities i. The only sounds are the cries of the many birds. ii. .a man bought some land and an old, empty lighthouse standing at the mouth.

Metaphor
A metaphor is a part of speech that is expressed by comparing two things, saying that one was or is the other. Its a comparison of two things that does not use as or like. It is effective because of the direct way that it communicates a message. i. ..the mouth of the little river Aelder ii. They filled the air with the noise of their wings

Similes
A form of comparison in which one thing is compared to another unlike thing by using specific words of comparison like like, as, and resembles Example: The sound of their wings is like a strong wind

Aliteration
Alliteration is the repetition of a single letter in the alphabet i. It was the Second World War. (w) ii. And Fritha comes and goes from the lighthouse. Shes like the snow goose. (s)

Consonance
Repetition of internal or ending consonant sounds of words close together in poetry i. Those two boats brought all of us off that beach without losing a man. ii. At four oclock one morning, the telephone woke him to take a boat across the Channel to Dunkirk

Imagery
Imagery involves one or more of your five senses (hearing, taste, touch, smell, sight). An author uses a word or phrase to stimulate your memory of those senses. These memories can be positive or negative which will contribute to the mood of your short story

Imagery
i. greys, blues and soft greens are the colours - It tells us about the situation in The Great Marsh that is nobody there ii. the sky and land are a wonderful red and gold

Symbolisme
Symbolism is when the author uses an object or reference to add deeper meaning to a story A character, an action, a setting, or an object representing something else can be a symbol. When we recognize a symbol and understand its meaning or meanings we see more clearly what the writer chose to emphasize.

Symbolisme
i. She did not see it as a bird. She saw it as Philips last goodbye before he disappeared for ever. ii. For Philip the coming and going of the snow goose showed the passing of time
