Problem 1 Playing shortstop, you pick up a ball and throw it to second base. The ball is thrown horizontally, with a speed of 22 m/s. The ball reaches the second baseman 0.45 s later. (a) How far were you from the second baseman? (b) By what distance did the ball drop vertically while it was in the air? Take g = 9.8 m/s2 . SOLUTION (a) x = vx t = (22)(0.45) = 9.9 m you were 9.9 m away from the second baseman. (b) y = vi,y t + (1/2)ay t2 = (0)(0.45) + (1/2)(9.8)(0.45) = 0.99 m the ball drops by 0.99 m.

Problem 2 (a) Find the normal force exerted on a 2.5-kg book resting on a surface inclined at 28 above the horizontal. Take the x axis to be parallel to the incline, pointing up the incline. Also, draw a free-body diagram for this situation. Label all forces and relevant information. (b) If the angle of the incline is reduced, do you expect the normal force to increase, decrease, or stay the same? Explain.

SOLUTION (a) Solve for N: Fy = N mg cos() N = mg cos() N = (2.5)(9.8) cos(28 ) N = 21.6 N the normal force is 21.6 N. (b) According to the previous equation for N, if the angle is decreased, the normal force increases.
