2. RATIONALE FOR THE SELECTION & STRUCTURING OF SUBJECT MATTER AND FOR THE METHODOLOGY
We are teachers and our students are studying mechanical engineering in the first year. We are going to teach them an interesting subject that is related to Mechanical Engineering. Why? To explain materials and what are their role in mechanical engineering.
3. AIMS
The students will be able to match a material to an end use. Explore how to specify materials. Students will appreciate the advantages and disadvantages of some materials. Student will identify five materials they see every day.
Assessment of LOs
At the end of this lesson the students will (Note: each LO has an assessment. Include a be able to understand the materials and variety of types.) Ask questions and quiz. what is used for. What is the suitable materials to use for windows, tables, doors, others? Why it is important? (Example). Ask about summaries and explain some points. Creative exercise. Small group work.
They can select the best, cheapest and most environmentally friendly material in some simple examples.
List the advantages and disadvantages of plastic, iron, wood, aluminium, glass, stainless steel.
Describe the properties of 6 materials types. Recognise some materials around the place.
TEACHER ACTIVITIES
Welcome the students and introduce ourselves to the students. Outline. Pose questions to establish the students prior knowledge about materials. Present samples and pictures of types of materials. Test some of materials.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES
Students will listen and ask some questions. Divide for two groups and make competition.
